Demographic performance review of a reintroduction project: Iberian lynx in Extremadura

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 9, Page 2189-2201, September 2025.
Demographic performance reviews are essential for understanding the drivers of population growth and for evaluating the outcomes of reintroduction initiatives. IPMs as exemplified by our Iberian lynx case study provide a powerful and flexible framework for quantifying reintroduction performance and addressing key research and management questions.

Perspectives on conservation grazing: The need for monitoring and communication

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 6, Issue 3, July–September 2025.
We compiled detailed data on the pattern of conservation grazing at Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve over 23 years. This recovered data shows how patterns of conservation grazing (timing, duration, frequency and intensity) have changed over time, demonstrate the value of hidden data sources and the importance of collaboration between ...

Enzymatic Treatment of Lignin in Alkaline Homogeneous Systems: A Review on Alkaliphilic Laccases

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 18, Issue 10, May 19, 2025.
This review summarizes the enzymatic treatment of lignin in alkaline homogeneous systems, with a focus on alkaliphilic laccases. Unlike native laccases that promote lignin polymerization under acidic conditions, these enzymes work in basic pH, where industrial lignins are soluble.

Characteristics of a new variant of rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus – RHDV2

open access: yesActa Biologica, 2019
RHD (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease) is an etiologic agent that causes viral haemorrhagic disease of rabbits, which is also referred to as rabbit plague. The desire to explore knowledge about this pathogen in the world results not only from its similarity ...

Temporal and spatial variation in trophic scenarios affects population demographic heterogeneity in Bonelli's Eagle (Aquila fasciata)

open access: yesIbis, Volume 167, Issue 1, Page 179-195, January 2025.
The recognition of individual variation has fundamental implications for ecological, evolutionary and biodiversity conservation. There is increasing theoretical interest in how spatial and temporal variation in the environment can create differences in the demographic contribution of individuals over space and time. However, empirical information about

Causes of Mortality and Disease in Rabbits and Hares: A Retrospective Study

open access: yesAnimals, 2020
In this study we determined the causes of mortality and disease in a total of 325 lagomorphs (rabbits and hares) in northern Spain between 2000 and 2018. Risk factors such as the species, age, sex, time of year and origin were also considered.

Quantifying the predation impact of an expanding mesocarnivore on declining small‐game species

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 325, Issue 1, Page 80-91, January 2025.
We estimated the predation impact of the Egyptian mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon), an expanding mesocarnivore in southwestern Europe, on two declining prey species highly valued by hunters: European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and red‐legged partridge (Alectoris rufa).

Pseudogenization of the MCP-2/CCL8 chemokine gene in European rabbit (genus Oryctolagus), but not in species of Cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus) and Hare (Lepus)

open access: yesBMC Genetics, 2012
Background Recent studies in human have highlighted the importance of the monocyte chemotactic proteins (MCP) in leukocyte trafficking and their effects in inflammatory processes, tumor progression, and HIV-1 infection.
