Astrophysical N-Body Simulations: Algorithms and Challenges [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The subjects and key questions faced by computational astrophysics using N-body simulations are discussed in the fields of globular star cluster dynamics, galactic nuclei and cosmological structure formation. After a comparison of the relevance of different N-body algorithms a new concept for a more flexible customized special purpose computer based on

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

The Role of Three-Body Interactions on the Equilibrium and Non-Equilibrium Properties of Fluids from Molecular Simulation [PDF]

open access: yes
The aim of this work is to use molecular simulation to investigate the role of three-body interatomic potentials in noble gas systems for two distinct phenomena: phase equilibria and shear flow.

The Dependency of Bar Formation Timescale on Disk Mass Fraction, Toomre Q, and Scale Height

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Bars are one of the most prominent galactic structures. The classical swing-amplification theory can qualitatively describe the spontaneous bar instability of stellar disks.

What Do Large Language Models Know About Materials?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
If large language models (LLMs) are to be used inside the material discovery and engineering process, they must be benchmarked for the accurateness of intrinsic material knowledge. The current work introduces 1) a reasoning process through the processing–structure–property–performance chain and 2) a tool for benchmarking knowledge of LLMs concerning ...

Accretion History Dependence of the Halo Depletion Radius

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We investigate the role of the accretion history in shaping the depletion radius of dark matter halos using a large cosmological N -body simulation. We show that the inner depletion radius, rescaled by the virial radius, depends strongly on the recent ...

MOCCA code for star cluster simulations - ii. comparison with n-body simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We describe a major upgrade of a Monte Carlo code that has previously been used for many studies of dense star clusters. We outline the steps needed in order to calibrate the results of the newMonte Carlo code against N-body simulations for large-N ...
