The role of N-glycans in spermatogenesis
Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 2003Many proteins, in particular those in the plasma membranes, are glycosylated with carbohydrates, which are grouped into O-glycans and N-glycans. O-glycans are synthesized step by step by glycosyltransferases, whereas N-glycans are synthesized by en-bloc transfer of the so-called high-mannose-type oligosachharide from lipid-linked precursor to ...

N-glycan occupancy of Arabidopsis N-glycoproteins
Journal of Proteomics, 2013Most secreted proteins in eukaryotes are modified on the amino acid consensus sequence NxS/T by an N-glycan through the process of N-glycosylation. The N-glycans on glycoproteins are processed in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to different mannose-type N-glycans or, when the protein passes through the Golgi apparatus, to different complex glycan forms.

Permethylated N-Glycan Analysis with Mass Spectrometry
2013Protein glycosylation plays an important role in multiple cell functions, and aberrations of protein glycosylation are associated with various malignancies including cancer. In this chapter, we provide a detailed protocol for MALDI MS analysis of permethylated N-glycans extracted from human serum proteins.

Cytokine Sensitivity and N‐Glycan Processing Mutations
2006The EGF and TGF-beta families of cytokines are critical regulators of cell proliferation, morphogenesis, and tissue repair. The signaling pathways downstream of EGF and TGF-beta receptors also contribute to cancer growth and metastasis. Cytokine receptors are glycoproteins, and we have recently shown that GlcNAc-branching of N-glycans enhances their ...

Plants synthesize N-glycans containing the antigenic sugars alpha(1,3)-fucose and beta(1,2)-xylose. Therefore it is important to monitor these N-glycans in monoclonal antibodies produced in plants (plantibodies). We evaluated several techniques to characterize the N-glycosylation of a plantibody produced in tobacco plants with and without the KDEL ...

The occurrence of free high-mannose type N-glycans is well demonstrated in mammalian cells. However, free complex-type N-glycans are not normally observed. Recent glycomic analyses of human cancers have revealed the accumulation of significant amounts of free sialylated complextypeN-glycans in pancreatic and prostate cancers.
