Antitussive agents as N-methylaspartate antagonists: further studies
The relative potencies of ketamine and the morphinan derivatives dextrorphan, dextromethorphan, and levorphanol as antagonists of the excitatory actions of N-methylaspartate on rat spinal neurones in vivo were examined, both following their microelectrophoretic administration and, with the exception of levorphanol, after intravenous injection. Applied

Is Metaphit a phencyclidine antagonist? Studies with ketamine, phencyclidine and N-methylaspartate
Life Sciences, 1986The dissociative anaesthetics, phencyclidine and ketamine, block excitation of central neurones by N-methylaspartate. Using the technique of microelectrophoresis on rat spinal neurones in vivo Metaphit, a phencyclidine receptor acylating agent, was tested to see whether it would antagonise this effect of dissociative anaesthetics.

Using intracellular recordings from pyramidal neurons in isolated slices of rat cerebral cortex epileptiform discharges evoked (1) in the presence of gamma-aminobutyric acid antagonists, and (2) in the absence of Mg2+ were compared. Depolarization shift responses recorded in the presence of bath applied picrotoxin, or electrophoretically applied ...

We have examined the effects of ketamine and kynurenate on the initial response and frequency dependent potentiation of response (wind-up) of class 2 neurones of the rat dorsal horn induced by repeated electrical stimulation of their receptive fields. Iontophoretic kynurenate reduced both the initial response and the wind-up.

Evidence for a direct action ofN-methylaspartate on non-neuronal cells
Brain Research, 1987The effects of N-methylaspartate (NMA) on extracellular amino acids and purine catabolites in the hippocampus were studied with brain dialysis in rats with unilateral hippocampal NMA lesions. In the lesioned side, an increased basal output of glutamine was observed while glutamate was significantly decreased.

Characterization of a thermostable methylaspartate ammonia lyase from Carboxydothermus hydrogenoformans [PDF]
Methylaspartate ammonia lyase (MAL; EC 4.3.1.2) catalyzes the reversible addition of ammonia to mesaconate to give (2S,3S)-3-methylaspartate and (2S,3R)-3-methylaspartate as products.
