Interfacial Structure of Nafion
ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2015While ion-conducting materials are primarily considered for their use as electrolytes (which depend upon their bulk properties, i.e. conductivity, crossover rejection, and material strength) their interfacial properties are becoming increasingly relevant for optimizing electrochemical devices.

Precipitation of ferrites in Nafion® membranes
Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 1996Iron oxide particles were precipitated in Nafion® 117 perfluorinated ion-exchange membranes using four different methods. Precipitated ferrites yielded magnetically responsive nanocomposite films and probed structural variations in the membrane. Optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and Mossbauer ...

Abstract By varying the amount of porogene ( ortho -dichlorobenzene, ODB), and optimization of the dispersion process, two types of solvent cast Nafion membranes with an equivalent weight of 1100 g/mol sulfonic acid can be obtained reproducibly. One type is a dense membrane with a porous layer on one surface.

ECS Transactions, 2009
A new type of proton conducting fuel cell membrane has been fabricated and evaluated via preliminary physical property determinations. The membrane is composed of a 3-D interconnected network of Nafion (perfluorosulfonic acid) nanofibers that have been embedded in an uncharged and inert polymer matrix.

Proton Solvation and Transport in Hydrated Nafion
The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2011Proton solvation properties and transport mechanisms have been studied in hydrated Nafion using the self-consistent multistate empirical valence bond (SCI-MS-EVB) method that includes the effects excess proton charge defect delocalization and Grotthuss proton hopping.

Electrokinetic Measurements of Thin Nafion Films
Langmuir, 2014We perform an electrokinetic characterization of ~300 nm Nafion films deposited on glass slides over a relatively unexplored region of ionic strength and pH. Owing to the small pore size of the Nafion, we probe the Nafion-fluid interface with the streaming potential measurement, and we probe ionic transport through the entire thickness of the Nafion ...

Evidence of Elongated Polymeric Aggregates in Nafion
Macromolecules, 2002Small-angle X-ray and neutron-scattering techniques have been used to probe the structure of swollen Nafion membranes in the range 10−10000 A. From analyzing the scattering data as a function of the polymer volume fraction and using a contrast variation method for the neutron experiments, we suggest a new structural model of Nafion in the hydrated ...

Rapid Proton Transmission through Nafion | Graphene | ALD Alumina | Nafion Membranes
ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2020Recent reports from several laboratories indicate that proton transmission through graphene and other 2D materials in contact with proton-conducting electrolytes can occur rapidly with a much lower activation energy than expected from a wide range of computational studies on the proton / graphene interaction energy, and a much higher selectivity ...

Non-Fickian Diffusion of Water in Nafion
Macromolecules, 2010Understanding the dynamics of water in solid-state polymer electrolytes (e.g., Nafion) is important for a variety of applications ranging from membrane-based water purification to hydrogen fuel cells. In this study, the dynamics of water in Nafion was investigated at both low and high humidities with time-resolved Fourier transform infrared−attenuated ...
