Full‐scale Shaking Table Tests on a 10‐story Steel Moment‐resisting Frame Building with Buckling‐restrained Braces

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 55, Issue 10, Page 2356-2378, August 2026.
ABSTRACT In February 2023, a comprehensive series of shaking table tests were conducted at the E‐Defense facility, the world's largest three‐dimensional earthquake simulator, on a full‐scale 10‐story steel moment‐resisting frame supplemented with BRBs.

Thermogenic methane and hydrogen generation in subducted sediments of the Nankai Trough

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Active and widespread CH4 accumulations and emissions in the Nankai Trough subduction zone are attested by numerous mud volcanoes, gas plumes, and gas hydrates containing biogenic and thermogenic CH4.

Tsunamigenic Earthquakes at Along-dip Double Segmentation and Along-strike Single Segmentation near Japan

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2015
A distinct difference of the earthquake activity in megathrust subduction zones is pointed out, concerning seismic segmentations in the vicinity of Japan—that is, the apparent distribution of earthquake hypocenters characterized by Along-dip Double ...

Sustainable thermogenic CH4 and H2 generation in the Nankai Trough subduction zone

open access: yes, 2023
Abstract Mud volcanoes, gas plumes, and gas hydrates comprising thermogenic and biogenic CH4 are widely distributed in the Nankai Trough subduction zone, showing ongoing significant CH4 activity. However, the source rocks of the thermogenic CH4 and the geological source of H2 for microbial CH4 production remain uncertain.

Interface Deformation, Exhumation, and Underplating: The Role of Plate Velocity Changes Throughout the Evolution of a Subduction Zone

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 27, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Exhumed metamorphic rocks yield critical insights into the mechanical, chemical, and thermal structure of the plate interface that can be used to infer exhumation pathways and their evolution throughout a subduction zone's lifetime. Metamorphosed oceanic rocks often record exhumation and underplating over relatively punctuated time periods ...

Evolution of Pore Fluid Pressure in an Accretionary Outer Wedge Over Megathrust Earthquake Cycles: The Northern Cascadia Example

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 2, June 2026.
The evolution of pore fluid pressure ( Pf$P_{\mathrm{f}}$) in the most seaward portion of a subduction accretionary prism plays an essential role in the cycle of tsunamigenic earthquakes. Based on recent geophysical observations, here we propose a testable conceptual model for this evolution for northern Cascadia offshore of Washington.

Improving Detectability of Seafloor Deformation From Bottom Pressure Observations Using Numerical Ocean Models

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2021
We investigated ocean bottom pressure (OBP) observation data at six plate subduction zones around the Pacific Ocean. The six regions included the Hikurangi Trough, the Nankai Trough, the Japan Trench, the Aleutian Trench, the Cascadia Subduction Zone ...

Modelling temporal changes in the gravity field in the Nankai Trough subduction zone, Japan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Monitoring slow earthquake activity in subduction zones can give important insight into the stress build-up and subsequent rupture extent of megathrust earthquakes. Extensive slow earthquake activity occurs up-dip of the seismogenic zone of the Nankai Trough subduction zone, an area that might be awaiting a large (M

Metamorphic Dehydration, Fluid Pressure, and the Frictional‐Viscous Transition Along Subduction Megathrusts: Case Study in Cascadia and Implications for Slow Earthquakes

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Relative plate motion in subduction zones transitions from frictional slip to viscous flow with increasing depth and temperature. The frictional‐viscous transition can control the depth extent of megathrust earthquakes and episodic tremor and slip (ETS).

Precise Temperature Measurements and Long‐Term Observations Revealed an Almost‐Constant Temperature Zone in a Vertical 700‐m‐Deep Borehole in the Aso Volcanic Region

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract To determine the subsurface temperature distribution and its relevance to groundwater flow in the deep subsurface, we repeated temperature depth profile measurements and conducted long‐term temperature observations in an ∼700‐m‐deep borehole penetrating the Futagawa fault along the Kiyama–Kashima graben in the Aso volcanic region, Japan from ...
