Pyrolysis Products as Soil Fertilizers: Screening of Potentially Hazardous Aromatic Compounds

open access: yesNova Biotechnologica et Chimica, 2016
This study investigated the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in pyrogenic carbonaceous materials (PCM) produced from three waste materials during slow pyrolysis at 400 and 500°C.

Risks for animal and human health related to the presence of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in feed and food

open access: yesEFSA Journal
EFSA was asked for a scientific opinion on the risks for animal and human health related to the presence of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in feed and food. The assessment focused on hexaCNs due to very limited data on other PCN congeners.

Photocatalytic Solar Hydrogen Peroxide Production on Donor+Acceptor Linear Polymer Semiconductor Powders Reconfigurable by H‐Bonding and π‐Stacking Interactions

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
A linear polymer, poly(2,3‐dihydroxynaphthalene), when insolubilized, leads to self‐assembly into a hydroquinone–quinone donor+acceptor semiconducting architecture through H‐bonding and π‐stacking interactions. The polymer behaves as a heterogeneous photocatalyst in water for H2O2 production via water oxidation and O2 reduction under visible light.

Unlocking Catalyst Activation as a Critical Bottleneck in Cross‐Coupling Reactions: Room‐Temperature Couplings of Weak Nucleophiles Enabled by [Pd(1‐MeNAP)TFA]2 Precatalysts

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
In many Pd‐catalyzed cross‐couplings, catalyst performance has been found to be limited by catalyst activation. Methylnaphthyl (MeNAP) palladium trifluoroacetate dimers are presented as easy‐to‐store and easy‐to‐handle precursors, which rapidly activate under reaction conditions, even when only weakly coordinating, non‐reducing nucleophiles are present.

A Chiral Saddle‐Shaped Nanographene With Two Heptagon‐Embedded [4]Helicenes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
We present a novel synthetic strategy toward a chiral saddle‐shaped nanographene (cSNG) via a two‐step oxidation of a prochiral anthracene precursor. The Scholl‐type oxidation first yields a key intermediate with sp3‐defect heptagons, and subsequent oxidative dehydrogenation affords fully conjugated cSNG.

Infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometric analysis of chromatographic fractions of crude oils and petroleum products

open access: yesBulletin of the Chemical Society of Ethiopia, 2007
Samples of light, medium and heavy Nigerian crude oils and petroleum products including diesel oil, engine oil (SAE 40) and gasoline (PMS) have been separated into four fractions of saturates, monoaromatics, diaromatics and polyaromatics by elution ...

An Agonist/Antagonist Photo‐Switchable Vitamin D Mimetic Enables Bidirectional Optical Control of VDR

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
Vitamin D exhibits complex and cell‐specific biological effects in multiple tissues via activation of the ligand‐sensing transcription factor vitamin D receptor (VDR). The photo‐switchable vitamin D mimetic 10 transitions between VDR antagonist (E) and agonist (Z) activity upon illumination and offers unprecedented bidirectional optical control over ...

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Waste Polystyrene Over Fe–B Composite Catalyst for Enhanced Liquid Fuel Production

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Healthcare derived polystyrene waste represents a growing and under addressed fraction of plastic waste streams due to contamination risks and limited recyclability. This study aims to investigate the valorization of waste polystyrene foam through catalytic and noncatalytic pyrolysis pathways to evaluate product yield distribution and identify
