Airway Clearance Techniques for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia; is the Cystic Fibrosis literature portable? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare inherited disease with impaired mucociliary clearance. Airway clearance techniques (ACTs) are commonly recommended for patients with PCD to facilitate mucus clearance, despite a lack of evidence in this group ...

Radiotherapy‐Induced Otitis Media With Effusion in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: A Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This meta‐analysis of eight studies comprising 582 NPC patients provides the first quantitative synthesis of radiotherapy‐induced otitis media with effusion (OME), demonstrating a significant overall risk difference of 0.18 (95% CI: −0.06 to 0.42, p < 0.0001) in OME naive ears.

Epigenetic Dysregulation of the NKX2‐1/SPDEF Axis Drives Persistent Goblet Cell Differentiation and Epithelial Barrier Dysfunction in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

open access: yesRespirology, EarlyView.
This study investigated airway epithelial barrier dysfunction persistence in ex‐smokers with COPD and underlying mechanisms using single‐cell RNA and ATAC sequencing. Epigenetic NKX2‐1/SPDEF dysregulation maintains goblet cell hyperplasia and barrier dysfunction despite long‐term smoking cessation.

Lysophosphatidylcholine as an adjuvant for lentiviral vector mediated gene transfer to airway epithelium: effect of acyl chain length [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background Poor gene transfer efficiency has been a major problem in developing an effective gene therapy for cystic fibrosis (CF) airway disease. Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), a natural airway surfactant, can enhance viral gene transfer in animal ...

EFFECT OF NASOTRACHEAL INTUBATION ON NASAL MUCOCILIARY CLEARANCE

open access: yesBritish Journal of Anaesthesia, 1987
Forty patients were studied to investigate the effect of nasotracheal intubation on nasal mucociliary clearance measured with the radiopaque disc method under standard conditions. Postoperative mucociliary slowing on the intubated side was observed in 65% of patients. Difficult or prolonged intubation increased the incidence of mucociliary stasis. Age,
