Nassarius shells: Preferred beads of the Palaeolithic

Abstract Over the past decade, research has shown that in Middle Palaeolithic sites in both Africa and Eurasia, members of the genus Nassarius were the preferred mollusks selected for use as beads. Species of this genus continued to be exploited as part of the shell bead corpus during the Upper Palaeolithic as well as in later periods.

Isolation and mRNA expression of hypoxia-inducible factor α (HIF-α) in two sublittoral nassariid gastropods: Nassarius siquijorensis and Nassarius conoidalis

Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is commonly found in vertebrates as an adaptation against hypoxia. In this study, partial sequences of HIF were first reported for subtidal nassariid gastropods, Nassarius siquijorensis and Nassarius conoidalis. The phylogenetic tree of HIF-α among various animal groups was inferred. Adults of both N. siquijorensis and N.

Using Nassarius stolatus as a potential heavy metal biomonitor.

Nassarius stolatus was evaluated as the potential heavy metal (Cd, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb) accumulator in Don Hoi Lot sandbar, Samut Songkhram province, Thailand. This selected species belongs to the Gastropoda, which is widely distributed in the coastal areas from the upper Gulf through the southern part of Thailand.

Chemoreception in Nassarius obsoletus : The Role of Specific Stimulatory Proteins

Proteins in human plasma and oyster fluid induce a strong feeding response in the marine snail Nassarius obsoletus . Purified human serum albumin induces a 50 percent positive response at concentrations of 1 to 2 × 10 -9 molar.

Developmental expression and biochemical characterization Nassarius obsoleta.

Electrophoretic analysis of catalase isozyme patterns of Nassarius obsoleta indicates that these isozymes are products of two separate loci. Five aminopeptidase isozymes have also been detected in N. obsoleta and the data suggest that at least two loci encode these aminopetidase isozymes.
