Around some extensions of Casas-Alvero conjecture for non-polynomial functions

open access: yesExtracta Mathematicae, 2020
We show that two natural extensions of the real Casas-Alvero conjecture in the non-polynomial setting do not hold.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Free Vibration Analysis of a Reconfigurable Modular Morphing Wing

open access: yesAerospace, 2022
Aircraft experience various phases during each flight. Optimal performance, without compromise, during various phases can be achieved through adaptability in the wing design.

Natural central extensions of groups

open access: yesGroups, Geometry, and Dynamics, 2008
Given a group G and an integer n ≥ 2 , we construct a new group \tilde{\mathcal{K}}(G,n) .

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Discrete Integrals Based on Comonotonic Modularity

open access: yesAxioms, 2013
It is known that several discrete integrals, including the Choquet and Sugeno integrals, as well as some of their generalizations, are comonotonically modular functions.

Testing silicone digit extensions as a way to suppress natural sensation to evaluate supplementary tactile feedback.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
Dexterous use of the hands depends critically on sensory feedback, so it is generally agreed that functional supplementary feedback would greatly improve the use of hand prostheses.

The extensive nature of group quality [PDF]

open access: yesEPL (Europhysics Letters), 2010
We consider groups of interacting nodes engaged in an activity as many-body, complex systems and analyse their cooperative behaviour from a mean-field point of view. We show that inter-nodal interactions rather than accumulated individual node strengths dominate the quality of group activity, and give rise to phenomena akin to phase transitions, where ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...
