Statistical models for natural sounds

open access: yes, 2010
It is important to understand the rich structure of natural sounds in order to solve important tasks, like automatic speech recognition, and to understand auditory processing in the brain.

Natural Selection as a Population-Level Causal Process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Recent discussions in the philosophy of biology have brought into question some fundamental assumptions regarding evolutionary processes, natural selection in particular.

Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Passive and active kinesthetic perception just noticeable difference for natural frequency of virtual dynamic systems

open access: yes, 2007
This paper investigates the just-noticeable-difference (JND) for natural frequency of virtual second order dynamic systems. Using a one degree-of-freedom haptic device, visual and/or haptic sensory feedback were presented during interactions with the ...

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Evaluation of the Influence of Lorentz Forces on the Natural Frequencies of a Dual-Microcantilever Sensor for Ultralow Mass Detection

open access: yesMicro
In this paper, the impact of Lorentz forces and temperature on the natural frequencies of a piezoresistive sensor composed of two microcantilevers with integrated U-shaped thin-film aluminum heaters are investigated.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

Screening and epitope characterization of Nidogen‐2‐specific nanobodies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Camel immunization and phage display were employed to generate high‐affinity VHH nanobodies against Nidogen‐2. After library construction, biopanning, ELISA screening, sequencing, and recombinant expression, selected nanobodies were purified and characterized, leading to the preliminary exploration of a nanobody‐based sandwich ELISA for specific ...

Variable Natural Frequency Damper for Minimizing Response of Offshore Wind Turbine: Effect on Dynamic Response According to Inner Water Level

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are exposed to cyclic loads resulting from wind, waves, and rotor rotation. These loads can induce resonance, thereby significantly increasing the amplitude of the structure and accelerating the accumulation of fatigue ...
