Information-Geometric Optimization with Natural Selection

open access: yesEntropy, 2020
Evolutionary algorithms, inspired by natural evolution, aim to optimize difficult objective functions without computing derivatives. Here we detail the relationship between classical population genetics of quantitative traits and evolutionary ...

Enhanced gradient learning for deep neural networks

open access: yesIET Image Processing, 2022
Deep neural networks have achieved great success in both computer vision and natural language processing tasks. How to improve the gradient flows is crucial in training very deep neural networks. To address this challenge, a gradient enhancement approach

Sinkhorn Natural Gradient for Generative Models

open access: yesCoRR, 2020
We consider the problem of minimizing a functional over a parametric family of probability measures, where the parameterization is characterized via a push-forward structure. An important application of this problem is in training generative adversarial networks.

Long‐Term Follow‐Up of Chemotherapy‐Associated Biological Aging in Women With Early Breast Cancer

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Women threated with adjuvant chemotherapy for early breast cancer have sustained long‐term increase in p16INK4a,, a robust marker of cell senescence, suggesting a chemotherapy‐associated age acceleration. p16INK4a as well as other biomarkers may identify patients at greatest risk for senescence‐related diseases of aging.

Urban-rural gradient detection using multivariate spatial analysis and landscape metrics

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Engineering, 2013
The gradient approach allows for an innovative representation of landscape composition and configuration not presupposing spatial discontinuities typical of the conventional methods of analysis.

Influence of open and closed river systems on the migrations of two northern New Zealand populations of banded kokopu (Galaxias fasciatus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Otolith microchemical analysis by laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to investigate the migratory life histories of banded kokopu (Galaxias fasciatus) in two streams on the North Island of New Zealand.

Diffusion Spectrum Imaging Maps Early Axonal Loss and a Unique Progressive Signal in Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To delineate specific in vivo white matter pathology in neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) using diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) and define its clinical relevance. Methods DSI was performed on 42 NIID patients and 38 matched controls.

Statistics of gradient directions in natural images.

open access: yes, 2007
Interest in finding statistical regularities in natural images has been growing since the advent of information theory and the advancement of the efficient coding hypothesis that the human visual system is optimised to encode natural visual stimuli.

Innate Immune Reprogramming Mediated by Endogenous Retroelement Dysregulation Drives Multiple Sclerosis Progression

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
Epigenetic reprogramming in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) and downstream myeloid cells, mediated by H3.3 downregulation and endogenous retroelement (ERE) overexpression, contributes to the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS). ABSTRACT Background Skewed myelopoiesis in the bone marrow has been identified as a key driver of multiple ...
