Engaging communities to prepare for natural hazards: a conceptual model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Natural hazard preparation by communities reduces disaster-induced physical health prob- lems and adverse experiences, lowers potential for post-traumatic stress disorders, and aids faster recovery.

A Canadian perspective on the May 2024 space weather event

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate
The May 2024 space weather disturbance is the latest (as of the time of writing) in a series of space weather events going back to 1859 that have documented impacts on critical infrastructure and technologies.

Natural hazards

open access: yes, 2016
Hazards associated with natural events in the hydrological domain broadly include river floods, landslides and droughts. Over the last decade there has been a focus on New Zealand research in the areas of flood, related to storm rainfalls, earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Range Extension of Borehole Strainmeters Using MOSFET-Based Multi-Switch Automatic Zero Setting

open access: yesSensors
Borehole strainmeters are essential tools for observing crustal deformation. In long-term observational applications, the dynamic changes in crustal deformation over multi-year scales often exceed the single measurement range of borehole strainmeters ...

The variations of electron density and temperature related to seismic activities observed by CSES

open access: yesNatural Hazards Research, 2021
s: In this study, we present the variations of electron density (Ne) and electron temperature (Te) in the nighttime ionosphere above the areas of seismic activities by the statistical method.

Assessing the Fire-Modified Meteorology of the Grassland and Forest Intersection Zone in Mongolia Using the WRF-Fire Model

open access: yesFire, 2023
Climate change is already significantly affecting the frequency of wildfires in most regions of the world, and the risk of wildfires is expected to amplify further with global warming.

Research on the RZB-Type Three-Dimensional Drilling Strain Measurement System

open access: yesSensors
Borehole strain gauges play a crucial role in geophysical, seismological, and crustal dynamics studies. While existing borehole strain gauges are proficient in measuring horizontal strains within vertical boreholes, their effectiveness in capturing ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.
