Assisted natural regeneration of selected tree species through silviculture interventions as a tool for restoring degraded natural forests in northwestern Ethiopia

open access: yesForest Science and Technology, 2023
Natural forest ecosystem assets and services are increasingly deteriorating due to forest degradation and deforestation in Northern parts of Ethiopia.

Assisted natural regeneration: a tool for degraded tropical forests [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A major part of anthropic impacts on natural tropical forests in central Africa is related to unmanaged shifting agriculture and fuelwood extraction by local communities, mainly along access tracks (roads, rivers,...)and at the edge of forests.

Bioadditive manufacturing of hybrid tissue scaffolds for controlled release kinetics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Development of engineered tissue scaffolds with superior control over cell-protein interactions is still very much infancy. Advancing through heterogeneous multifold scaffolds with controlled release fashion enables synchronization of regenerating tissue

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Tree regeneration responds more to shade casting by the overstorey and competition in the understorey than to abundance per se [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Manipulating the overstorey is the key tool for forest managers to steer natural regeneration. Opening up the canopy does not only create favourable light conditions for tree seedling growth, but also for (competitive) understorey species.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Investigations on spatial heterogeneity of humus forms and natural regeneration of Larch (Larix decidua Mill.) and Swiss Stone Pine (Pinus cembra L.) in an alpine timberline ecotone (Upper Engadine, Central Alps, Switzerland) [PDF]

open access: yesGeographica Helvetica
The north-west facing study area in the Upper Engadine (Central Alps, Switzerland) encompasses the whole timberline ecotone between 2200 m and 2400 m a.s.l..

A new methodology to evaluate natural regeneration: A case study of Quercus ilex in the montado in Portugal

open access: yesFrontiers in Forests and Global Change, 2023
Regeneration and recruitment are primordial for stand sustainability. However, natural regeneration is usually only evaluated by density and height, so no details are provided regarding the individual traits of the saplings/seedlings. Hence, the findings

Distance to forest, mammal and bird dispersal drive natural regeneration on degraded tropical peatland

open access: yes, 2020
Restoration of peat swamp forest (PSF) on degraded Southeast Asian peatlands could reduce global carbon emissions and biodiversity loss. However, multiple ecological barriers are believed to hinder natural regeneration of native trees on degraded ...
