Tree crown architecture: a tool for decay resistance evaluation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The variability of natural durability contributes to the bad perception of some wood end-users. In our search, we need to adjust our methods and strategies to estimate natural durability and extract higher value from wood resources.

Naturally improving insulin resistance with amorfrutins [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2012
The incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D), recognized in 2006 as a global health priority by the United Nations, is increasing worldwide. According to the International Diabetes Federation, approximately 190 million people are affected by T2D worldwide, a number expected to nearly double in the coming 20 y.

Natural Resistances to Viruses in Cucurbits [PDF]

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
Cucurbit viruses cause considerable economic losses worldwide. The most common viral diseases affecting this crop family are Potyviruses, Cucumoviruses, Criniviruses, Ipomoviruses, Tobamoviruses, and the emerging Begomoviruses. Four main cucurbit crops are grown worldwide, namely melon, cucumber (Cucumis), watermelon (Citrullus), and squash (Cucurbita).

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

NK Cell Activity and CD57+/NKG2Chigh Phenotype Are Increased in Men Who Have Sex With Men at High Risk for HIV

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2020
IntroductionThe HIV-exposed seronegative (HESN) status is for individuals who remain seronegative despite repeated exposure to HIV. One of the main cohorts within this group is men who have sex with men (MSM).

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Strawberry breeding for disease resistance in Dresden [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Verticillium resistance is one of the most important breeding goals in strawberry resistance breeding at Dresden-Pillnitz. Resistance evaluation of cultivars, advanced selections and seedlings is realized under natural conditions at a provocation field

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
