Animal detection precedes access to scene category.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The processes underlying object recognition are fundamental for the understanding of visual perception. Humans can recognize many objects rapidly even in complex scenes, a task that still presents major challenges for computer vision systems.

BM-IQE: An Image Quality Evaluator with Block-Matching for Both Real-Life Scenes and Remote Sensing Scenes

open access: yesSensors, 2020
Like natural images, remote sensing scene images; of which the quality represents the imaging performance of the remote sensor, also suffer from the degradation caused by imaging system.

Forward‐Biased Perovskite Photodiodes for In‐Sensor Optical Change Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A forward‐biased perovskite photodiode is introduced as an in‐sensor analog preprocessing unit that uses current balancing between photocurrent and injection current to generate optical changes relative to programmable optical reference levels. The device directly converts reference‐relative optical changes into bipolar current signals, enabling sensor‐

Liquid Crystal Elastomer‐Based Haptic Pixel Arrays at Your Fingertips for Advanced Human–Machine Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We mechanically program liquid crystal elastomer coatings as a stimuli‐responsive and digitally addressable platform for refreshable tactile displays; we validate the perceptual performance of our dynamic device matches conventional static tactile media.

Volatile Memristive Devices With Tunable Temporal Dynamics For Event‐Based Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Tunable volatile memristive devices can serve various neural‐inspired tasks that require different time windows of information retention. The ionic‐based volatility of the presented Pt/a‐STO/TaOx/Ta device stack can be reproducibly and controllably tuned in multiple ways.

Improving the Robustness of Visual Teach‐and‐Repeat Navigation Using Drift Error Correction and Event‐Based Vision for Low‐Light Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Visual teach‐and‐repeat (VTR) navigation allows robots to learn and follow routes without building a full metric map. We show that navigation accuracy for VTR can be improved by integrating a topological map with error‐drift correction based on stereo vision.

Phase synchrony facilitates binding and segmentation of natural images in a coupled neural oscillator network

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2014
Synchronization has been suggested as a mechanism of binding distributed feature representations facilitating segmentation of visual stimuli. Here we investigate this concept based on unsupervised learning using natural visual stimuli.

Analysis of Natural Scene Derived Spatial Frequency Responses for Estimating Camera ISO12233 Slanted-edge Performance

open access: yes, 2021
The Natural Scene derived Spatial Frequency Response (NS-SFR) framework automatically extracts suitable step-edges from natural pictorial scenes and processes these edges via the edge-based ISO12233 (e-SFR) algorithm.
