Multidirectional Motion Strategy of Miniature Water Surface Robot Actuated by Single Exciter

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A novel multidirectional motion strategy on the water surface based on a single exciter is proposed, and a single‐exciter single‐plate module is developed for actuation. The driving forces generation mechanism of the module is revealed from the perspective of the asymmetric surface wave field.

Centre-surround interactions in response to natural scene stimulation in the primary visual cortex

open access: yes, 2005
Centre–surround interaction in the primary visual cortex (area V1) has been studied extensively using artificial, abstract stimulus patterns, such as bars, gratings and simple texture patterns.

On the Sparse Structure of Natural Sounds and Natural Images: Similarities, Differences, and Implications for Neural Coding

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2019
Sparse coding models of natural images and sounds have been able to predict several response properties of neurons in the visual and auditory systems. While the success of these models suggests that the structure they capture is universal across domains ...

A Self‐Healing Permanent Magnet Putty for Soft Robot Skins With Force Sensing and Functional Recovery

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Permanent magnet putty (PMP) integrates high‐coercivity NdFeB particles with a dynamic polyborosiloxane–Ecoflex matrix, achieving rapid self‐healing (90% mechanical recovery in 10 s) and magnetic recovery within 20 min. With twice the sensitivity of commercial putties, PMP enables precise 5–30 N force detection and discrimination between pressing and ...

Scene statistics in 3D natural environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
textIn this dissertation, we conducted a stereoscopic eye tracking experiment using naturalistic stereo images. We analyzed low level 2D and 3D scene features at binocular fixations and randomly selected places.

A Gestalt inference model for auditory scene segregation.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology, 2019
Our current understanding of how the brain segregates auditory scenes into meaningful objects is in line with a Gestaltism framework. These Gestalt principles suggest a theory of how different attributes of the soundscape are extracted then bound ...

Stereoscopic Video Quality Assessment Using Oriented Local Gravitational Force Statistics

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
We develop a new no-reference (NR) stereoscopic video quality assessment model that adopts oriented local gravitational force (OLGF) statistics in the space-time domain.

Categorization goals modulate the use of natural scene statistics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Understanding natural scenes involves the contribution of bottom–up analysis and top–down modulatory processes. However, the interaction of these processes during the categorization of natural scenes is not well understood.

Multimodal Human–Robot Interaction Using Human Pose Estimation and Local Large Language Models

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A multimodal human–robot interaction framework integrates human pose estimation (HPE) and a large language model (LLM) for gesture‐ and voice‐based robot control. Speech‐to‐text (STT) enables voice command interpretation, while a safety‐aware arbitration mechanism prioritizes gesture input for rapid intervention.

A Comparison of Image Statistics of Peacock Jumping Spider Colour Patterns and Natural Scenes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
The form of arbitrary sexual signals may be driven by the need to be detectable against the background or, alternatively, by selection for efficient processing by the nervous system. This latter alternative is a prediction of the sensory drive hypothesis
