A review of seagrass ecosystem services: providing nature-based solutions for a changing world

open access: yes, 2023
Seagrasses are marine flowering plants, which form extensive meadows in intertidal and shallow water marine environments. They provide a wide range of ecosystem services, which directly or indirectly benefit humans and can be grouped into four broad ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

The nature-based solution implementation gap: A review of nature-based solution governance barriers and enablers

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Management
Nature-based solutions (NbS) represent a critical umbrella concept encompassing measures that employ nature's properties to systemically address societal challenges, potentially providing benefits for biodiversity, climate and people. NbS are accordingly emerging on an ever-expanding number of policy agendas, such as the Kunming-Montreal Global ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Peatland restoration is anticipated to provide climate change mitigation over all time-scales: a UK case-study

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Communications
Peatlands provide one of the largest terrestrial carbon stocks in the UK, but a large proportion of peatlands have been drained for peat extraction, agriculture and other uses, turning them into a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ...

Strategies for mainstreaming nature-based solutions in urban governance capacities in ten European cities [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper explores the institutional mainstreaming of nature-based solutions (NBS) to advance a process-based understanding about how to strategically develop the governance capacities needed for systemic, localised and inclusive NBS.

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.
