Basophil Competence during Hookworm (Necator americanus) Infection [PDF]
A popular hypothesis to explain parasite survival in the presence of a pronounced T helper 2 phenotype in helminth-parasitized populations has been FcϵRI blockade by parasite-induced polyclonal IgE. To begin to test the hypothesis that FcϵRI-bearing cells would be refractory to activation in parasitized populations, we investigated basophil function in

Sensitivity to ivermectin and pyrantel of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Necator americanus [PDF]
Experiments were carried out in the hamster to compare the relative susceptibility of Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum to treatment with ivermectin. A. ceylanicum was found to be 300 times more sensitive to the anthelmintic with a 50% effective dose (ED50) of the order of 10-15 micrograms kg-1 body weight whilst that for N.

Organometallic derivatization of existing drugs is a common strategy to look for new drug candidates. This work describes the derivatization of the benzimidazole anthelmintic scaffold, from the synthesis of the organometallic derivatives to the evaluation of their biological properties. It highlights a broad range of antiparasitic activities and leaves
