Evaluation of Negative Skin Friction on Bridge Abutment Piles
DFI Journal The Journal of the Deep Foundations Institute, 2021Piles are used to transfer loads of structures to deeper and stronger soil layers through skin friction and/or end bearing. Surcharge loads, site grading, or dewatering may induce downward movement of soil adjacent to piles installed in a compressible medium.

Briefing: Serviceability of piles with negative skin friction
Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Geotechnical Engineering, 2013This briefing presents an approximate but simple approach to serviceability design of piles with negative skin friction. The method allows the capacity required in the underlying stable soil to be estimated directly from the allowable pile head settlement, soil settlement profile and distribution of shaft stress in the settling soil layer.

Negative skin friction on piles in consolidating ground
2014Pile foundations located within consolidating ground are commonly subjected to negative skin friction (NSF) and failures of pile foundations related to dragload (compressive force) and downdrag (pile settlement) have been reported in literature. In addition, they are normally subjected to axial load and NSF simultaneously. A field study was carried out

Negative Skin Friction Distribution on a Single Pile - Numerical Analysis
2018Negative skin friction occurs when the settlement of the adjacent soil is larger than the pile settlement. Loading the surface next to the pile is one of the most common causes for negative friction to mobilize along the pile’s shaft. In this paper, a numerical simulation will be carried out using Matsui-Abe soil model to study the case of a single ...
