Microbisporicin (NAI-107) protects Galleria mellonella from infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2023
Due to the increasing incidence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens, the need for the development of alternative compounds is of utmost importance. Bacteriocins are considered a promising alternative to antibiotics.

Binding of cholesterol by Neisseria gonorrhoeae [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1978
The binding of [1,2-3H]cholesterol to Neisseria gonorrhoeae CS-7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhimurium (smooth and rough strains) was investigated. The kinetics of cholesterol binding to N. gonorrhoeae CS-7 demonstrated that binding occurred slowly with maximum binding by 10 h.

Acclimation to Nutritional Immunity and Metal Intoxication Requires Zinc, Manganese, and Copper Homeostasis in the Pathogenic Neisseriae

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2022
Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis are human-specific pathogens in the Neisseriaceae family that can cause devastating diseases. Although both species inhabit mucosal surfaces, they cause dramatically different diseases.

Resistance to peroxynitrite in Neisseria gonorrhoeae [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology, 2009
Neisseria gonorrhoeaeencodes a number of important genes that aid in survival during times of oxidative stress. The same immune cells capable of oxygen-dependent killing mechanisms also have the capacity to generate reactive nitrogen species (RNS) that may function antimicrobially.

Nationwide profiling of vaginal microbiota in Chinese women reveals age‐dependent shifts and predictive biomarkers for reproductive health

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
The vaginal microbiome is central to reproductive health, yet large‐scale studies in East Asian populations remain scarce. Here, we characterized the vaginal microbiota of 6423 Chinese women of reproductive age across 18 provinces and assessed associations with 33 host factors.
