Separation of planarian neoblasts based on density gradient centrifugation
Hydrobiologia, 1995For highly purified preparations of neoblasts, density gradient centrifugation in Percoll solutions (Pertoft et al., 1978) was applied to cell suspensions obtained by disintegrating Dugesia polychroa (Schmidt) in culture medium contained in a Dounce homogenizer (tolerance: 50 µm; one animal 12 mm in length per ml).

FoxO is required for neoblast differentiation during planarian regeneration
International Journal of Biological MacromoleculesStem cells are of great importance in the maintenance and regeneration of tissues, with Forkhead box O (FoxO) proteins emerging as pivotal regulators of their functions. However, the precise impact of FoxO proteins on stem cell behavior within regenerative environments remains ambiguous.

Multicellularity, stem cells, and the neoblasts of the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea
Experimental Cell Research, 2005All multicellular organisms depend on stem cells for their survival and perpetuation. Their central role in reproductive, embryonic, and post-embryonic processes, combined with their wide phylogenetic distribution in both the plant and animal kingdoms intimates that the emergence of stem cells may have been a prerequisite in the evolution of ...

Intrinsic chemiluminescence of neoblasts in the course of planarian regeneration
We investigated the kinetics of luminescence that is induced by the reactive oxygen species in planarians in the course of regeneration. It was found that regeneration is accompanied by changes in the concentration of reactive oxygen species, which correlate with such energy-intensive processes as oxidative stress caused by damage to cell membranes ...

On the origin of neoblasts in freshwater planarians (Turbellaria)
Hydrobiologia, 1986Experiments on 1) regeneration of the cave-adapted planarian, Sphalloplana zeschi, 2) induction of sexuality in an asexual strain of Dugesia japonica japonica by feeding, and 3) culture of dissociated planarian cells, show that neoblasts originate from intestinal cells, i.e. phagocytic cells and granular clubs.

The transformation of gastrodermal cells to neoblasts in regenerating Phagocata gracilis (leidy)
Experimental Cell Research, 1968Vital dyes fed to the triclad flatworm, Phagocata gracilis, became concentrated and remained exclusively in the gastrodermal cells of the intact worm. The dye inclusions were identified by color under oil immersion. These inclusions were also found in the 4 day post amputation blastemas of dye fed decapitated worms, and in the parenchyma of dye fed ...
