Use of next-generation molecular tools in archaeological neotropical deer sample analysis
Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, 2016Abstract Taxonomic identity and genetic variation of three bone samples from a late Holocene earth mound in the eastern Uruguayan lowlands were analyzed. Samples were initially identified by morphology as being from pampas deer ( Ozotoceros bezoarticus ), a middle-sized cervid that occupies open environments forming herds of up to 50 animals ...

Louse flies or deer keds, Lipoptena spp., are widespread in Neotropical cervids, but the vector-borne pathogens of louse flies had only been previously reported in the Northern hemisphere. This is the first report of Bartonella spp. in deer louse flies (Lipoptena mazamae) in the neotropics collected from gray brocket deer ( Mazama gouazoubira ) in ...

Recent Studies of White-Tailed Deer in the Neotropics
2019The white-tailed deer is the species with the greatest distribution in the American continent. This deer is considered a species with high plasticity because it lives in different types of vegetation ranging from temperate forests to dry tropical forests, arid zones and secondary vegetation.

Spotted fever (SF) is a tick-borne disease associated with Rickettsia spp.. In the Pampa biome, Southern Brazil, cases of SF seem to be strongly linked with the practice of hunting wild animals. An investigation of rickettsiae in tick species found on wild animals could provide more information regarding the rickettsiosis enzootic cycle.

Context Polygynous deer rut vocalisations have been found to be highly conspicuous, typical of the species and important in sexual selection. Information about vocalisations is not available for Neotropical species (subfamily Odocoileinae). Aims

Eco-morphological convergence among Neotropical deer
Biological Journal of the Linnean SocietyAbstract Adaptative convergences of ecomorphological traits are widespread in several animal lineages. Among Neotropical deer there are very similar species characterized by a set of homoplasies: small body sizes, spiked antlers, and front legs shorter than the rear legs.

Productive behaviour of red deer (Cervus elaphus) relocated to the Neotropical Realm
New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, 2005Abstract In 1994, a herd of red deer (Cervus elaphus) was introduced to Mexico from New Zealand; animals were distributed among 17 farms. Information was gathered from two farms situated in the Neotropical Realm, south of the Tropic of Cancer. Farm A is a research facility in the temperate highlands; Farm B is for extension purposes, in the dry tropics.

Several recent studies have tried to unravel the complex evolutionary history of Neotropical cervids. However, the two Mesoamerican brocket deer Mazama pandora and M. temama have not been included in these studies and their relationship to other Neotropical cervids remains unclear. Here, we present analyses that included concatenated sequences from the
