Polysialic acid masks neural cell adhesion molecule antigenicity

Brain Research, 2019
The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is a transmembrane protein involved in major cellular processes. The addition of polysialic acid (PSA), a post-translational modification (PTM) almost exclusively carried by NCAM, alters NCAM properties and functions and is therefore tightly regulated.

Neural cell adhesion molecule expression in Xenopus embryos

Developmental Biology, 1987
The spatiotemporal pattern of expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule NCAM was mapped immunohistochemically in embryos of the frog Xenopus, from blastula to early swimming stages, using a polyclonal antibody that recognizes Xenopus NCAM. The neural plate stage was the earliest at which NCAM could be detected.

Neural cell adhesion molecules influence second messenger systems

Neuron, 1989
We have investigated the influence of the neural cell adhesion molecules L1 and N-CAM on second messenger systems using a PC12 rat pheochromocytoma cell line as a model and triggering cell surface receptors by specific antibody binding. Antibodies directed against L1 and N-CAM, but not against other cell surface components, reduce intracellular levels ...

The neural cell adhesion molecule.

Current opinion in drug discovery & development, 2009
During the past year, the understanding of the structure and function of neural cell adhesion has advanced considerably. The three-dimensional structures of several of the individual modules of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) have been determined, as well as the structure of the complex between two identical fragments of the NCAM.

Embryonic neural cell adhesion molecules on human natural killer cells

European Journal of Immunology, 1989
AbstractThe neural cell adhesion molecules (NCAM) are surface glycoproteins that were first described in brain tissue. NCAM mediate adhesion in a variety of cell‐cell interactions. In the present study we show that the so‐called “embryonic” NCAM, i.e., the highly polysialylated forms of these proteins, are expressed on natural killer cells and some CD3+

Regulation of neural cell adhesion molecule sialylation state

International Journal of Biochemistry, 1991
The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is a complex of three immunologically-related membrane polypeptides of 180, 140 and 120 kDa molecular weight (Hirn et al., 1983; Choung and Edelman, 1984; Sheehan et al., 1986). These isoforms are primary translation products which arise through the alternate splicing of a single gene located on human chromosome

Cell adhesion molecules in neural development.

Developmental neuroscience, 1989
Adhesive mechanisms have been implicated in several morphogenetic processes during development. In the last decade several molecules mediating specific adhesion between cells and between cells and their environment have been characterized. Possible roles in morphogenesis have been established for some of these molecules.

Expression of Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule in Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreas, 2001
Neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) has been found to be a significant factor for survival in various solid tumors. In the present study, we examined the expression of NCAM in exocrine tumors of the pancreas by immunohistochemistry, using two monoclonal antibodies against NCAM and polysialic acid (MAB735).

Developmental biology of a neural cell adhesion molecule

Nature, 1984
A membrane glycoprotein isolated from embryonic brain has been shown to be a ligand in the formation of cell-cell bonds. The molecule, called neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM), participates in several aspects of neural development, including the formation of plexiform layers, neurite fasciculation and nerve-muscle interactions.

Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule of Taste Buds

Journal of Electron Microscopy, 1992
The distribution of the neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) in the taste buds of adult and developing mice was studied by use of an immunocytochemical technique. In adult mice, nerve fibers and some elongated taste bud cells reacted with anti-N-CAM antibody.
