Neural GPI anchored cell adhesion molecules

Frontiers in Bioscience, 2003
When first identified, neural cell adhesion molecules (neural CAMs) were thought to act simply by providing cell surfaces with differential adhesion properties. In the decades following the identification of the first neural CAMs, it has been realized that these proteins are actually involved in very complex processes such as axon guidance, neuronal ...

Neural cell adhesion molecule (CD56)‐positive B‐cell lymphoma

European Journal of Haematology, 2007
AbstractExpression of neural cell‐adhesion molecule CD56 is a rare event in B‐cell lymphoma. We described four cases of CD56‐positive B‐cell lymphoma, including follicular lymphoma and diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma. These lymphoma cells expressed CD10 and bcl‐6, which suggests germinal center‐stage phenotype.

Targeting the neural cell adhesion molecule in cancer

Cancer Letters, 2007
NCAM is a tumour associated antigen expressed on small cell lung cancer, neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarkoma, brain tumours, multiple myelomas and acute myeloid leukaemia. Constant and strong expression of NCAM is a prerequisite for the development of antibody-based immunotherapies.

Intracellular Signaling by the Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule

Neurochemical Research, 2003
Cell adhesion molecules are known to play far more complex roles than mechanically attaching one cell to an adjacent cell or to components of the extracellular matrix. Thus, important roles for cell adhesion molecules in the regulation of intracellular signaling pathways have been revealed.

The neural cell adhesion molecule and synaptic plasticity

Journal of Neurobiology, 1995
AbstractHighly stereotyped patterns of neuronal connections are laid down during the development of the nervous system via a range of activity independent and activity dependent mechanisms. Whereas the coarse hard‐wiring of the nervous system appears to rely on molecular recognition events between the neuron, its pathway, and its target, the ...

Neural cell adhesion molecule expression in thyroid cancer

Oncology Reports, 1996
Neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is an integral membrane glycoprotein that participates in cell-cell interactions. We examined the expression of neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) by immunohistochemistry in 65 cases of thyroid disease. In the majority of thyroid tumors, NCAM expression was detected in tumor cells.

Polysialic acid masks neural cell adhesion molecule antigenicity

Brain Research, 2019
The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is a transmembrane protein involved in major cellular processes. The addition of polysialic acid (PSA), a post-translational modification (PTM) almost exclusively carried by NCAM, alters NCAM properties and functions and is therefore tightly regulated.

Neural cell adhesion molecule expression in Xenopus embryos

Developmental Biology, 1987
The spatiotemporal pattern of expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule NCAM was mapped immunohistochemically in embryos of the frog Xenopus, from blastula to early swimming stages, using a polyclonal antibody that recognizes Xenopus NCAM. The neural plate stage was the earliest at which NCAM could be detected.

Neural cell adhesion molecules influence second messenger systems

Neuron, 1989
We have investigated the influence of the neural cell adhesion molecules L1 and N-CAM on second messenger systems using a PC12 rat pheochromocytoma cell line as a model and triggering cell surface receptors by specific antibody binding. Antibodies directed against L1 and N-CAM, but not against other cell surface components, reduce intracellular levels ...

The neural cell adhesion molecule.

Current opinion in drug discovery & development, 2009
During the past year, the understanding of the structure and function of neural cell adhesion has advanced considerably. The three-dimensional structures of several of the individual modules of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) have been determined, as well as the structure of the complex between two identical fragments of the NCAM.
