Relating Neural Dynamics to Neural Coding [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2007
We demonstrate that two key theoretical objects used widely in computational neuroscience, the phase-resetting curve (PRC) from dynamics and the spike triggered average (STA) from statistical analysis, are closely related when neurons fire in a nearly regular manner and the stimulus is sufficiently small.

Hippocampal Neurogenesis Reduces the Dimensionality of Sparsely Coded Representations to Enhance Memory Encoding

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2019
Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) of mammals is known to contribute to memory encoding in many tasks. The DG also exhibits exceptionally sparse activity compared to other systems, however, whether sparseness and neurogenesis ...

Neural burst codes disguised as rate codes [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
AbstractThe burst coding hypothesis posits that the occurrence of sudden high-frequency patterns of action potentials constitutes a salient syllable of the neural code. Many neurons, however, do not produce clearly demarcated bursts, an observation invoked to rule out the pervasiveness of this coding scheme across brain areas and cell types.

Classification of Whisker Deflections From Evoked Responses in the Somatosensory Barrel Cortex With Spiking Neural Networks

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2022
Spike-based neuromorphic hardware has great potential for low-energy brain-machine interfaces, leading to a novel paradigm for neuroprosthetics where spiking neurons in silicon read out and control activity of brain circuits.

Challenges to the Vestibular System in Space: How the Brain Responds and Adapts to Microgravity

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2021
In the next century, flying civilians to space or humans to Mars will no longer be a subject of science fiction. The altered gravitational environment experienced during space flight, as well as that experienced following landing, results in impaired ...

Indices for Testing Neural Codes [PDF]

open access: yesNeural Computation, 2008
One of the most critical challenges in systems neuroscience is determining the neural code. A principled framework for addressing this can be found in information theory. With this approach, one can determine whether a proposed code can account for the stimulus-response relationship.

Internal State Dependent Odor Processing and Perception—The Role of Neuromodulation in the Fly Olfactory System

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2018
Animals rely heavily on their sense of olfaction to perform various vital interactions with an ever-in-flux environment. The turbulent and combinatorial nature of air-borne odorant cues demands the employment of various coding strategies, which allow the

An inhibitory gate for state transition in cortex

open access: yeseLife, 2017
Large scale transitions between active (up) and silent (down) states during quiet wakefulness or NREM sleep regulate fundamental cortical functions and are known to involve both excitatory and inhibitory cells.
