Neurofilaments and Neurofilament Proteins in Health and Disease. [PDF]
SUMMARYNeurofilaments (NFs) are unique among tissue-specific classes of intermediate filaments (IFs) in being heteropolymers composed of four subunits (NF-L [neurofilament light]; NF-M [neurofilament middle]; NF-H [neurofilament heavy]; and α-internexin or peripherin), each having different domain structures and functions.

Squid Giant Axon Contains Neurofilament Protein mRNA but does not Synthesize Neurofilament Proteins. [PDF]
When isolated squid giant axons are incubated in radioactive amino acids, abundant newly synthesized proteins are found in the axoplasm. These proteins are translated in the adaxonal Schwann cells and subsequently transferred into the giant axon. The question as to whether any de novo protein synthesis occurs in the giant axon itself is difficult to ...

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease Type 2E/1F mutant neurofilament proteins assemble into neurofilaments. [PDF]
AbstractCharcot–Marie–Tooth disease Type 2E/1F (CMT2E/1F) is a peripheral neuropathy caused by mutations in neurofilament protein L (NFL), which is one of five neurofilament subunit proteins that co‐assemble to form neurofilaments in vivo. Prior studies on cultured cells have shown that CMT2E/1F mutations disrupt neurofilament assembly and lead to ...

Properties of neurofilament protein kinase [PDF]
Neurofilament (NF) protein kinase, partially purified from NF preparations [Toru-Delbauffe & Pierre (1983) FEBS Lett. 162, 230-234], was found to be distinct from both the casein kinase present in NFs and the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase which is able to phosphorylate NFs. NF-kinase phosphorylated the three NF protein components.

Neurofilament proteins in neurodegenerative diseases [PDF]
The function of neurofilaments, the major component in large myelinated neurons, is not well understood even though they were discovered as structures over 100 years ago. Recent studies have suggested that neuro-filaments are closely related to many neurodegenerative diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson disease Alzheimer disease ...

Neurofilaments: The C-Reactive Protein of Neurology [PDF]
Neurofilaments (NFs) are quickly becoming the biomarkers of choice in the field of neurology, suggesting their use as an unspecific screening marker, much like the use of elevated plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) in other fields. With sensitive techniques being readily available, evidence is growing regarding the diagnostic and prognostic value of NFs ...

Neurofilament Protein Heterotetramers as Assembly Intermediates [PDF]
Evidence is presented for the existence of a soluble heterotetramer containing the low and middle molecular weight neurofilament (NF) proteins, NF-L and NF-M, and one containing the low and high molecular weight proteins, NF-L and NF-H, and for their role in filament assembly.

Neurofilament-Immunoreactive Neurons Are Not Selectively Vulnerable in Alzheimer's Disease
Abnormal neurofilament protein distribution and phosphorylation contributes to the cytoskeletal pathology of Alzheimer's disease. Anatomical studies suggest that cortical neurons immunoreactive for nonphosphorylated 200-kDa neurofilament are most ...

How the projection domains of NF-L and alpha-internexin determine the conformations of NF-M and NF-H in neurofilaments [PDF]
Making use of a numerical self-consistent field method and polymer brush concepts, we model the solvated corona of neurofilaments (NF) composed of projection domains (unstructured tails) of constituent proteins.
