Corticosterone Potentiation of Cocaine-Induced Reinstatement of Conditioned Place Preference in Mice is Mediated by Blockade of the Organic Cation Transporter 3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The mechanisms by which stressful life events increase the risk of relapse in recovering cocaine addicts are not well understood. We previously reported that stress, via elevated corticosterone, potentiates cocaine-primed reinstatement of cocaine seeking

Pivotal Role of Adenosine Neurotransmission in Restless Legs Syndrome

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2018
The symptomatology of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) includes periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS), dysesthesias, and hyperarousal. Alterations in the dopaminergic system, a presynaptic hyperdopaminergic state, seem to be involved in PLMS, while ...

Subicular Astrocytes Govern Seizure‐Impaired Fear Memory

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Astrocytes in dorsal subiculum act as a critical modulator of seizure‐associated cognitive dysfunction, operating through a Ca2+‐dependent adenosine‐linked astrocyte‐neuron signaling pathway that disrupts neuronal circuit homeostasis. This research highlights the potential of astrocyte‐targeted interventions as a therapeutic strategy, moving beyond the

Field effects in the CNS play functional roles

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2010
An endogenous electrical field effect, i.e. ephaptic transmission, occurs when an electric field associated with activity occurring in one neuron polarizes the membrane of another neuron.

Effect of methylphenidate treatment during adolescence on norepinephrine transporter function in orbitofrontal cortex in a rat model of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with hypofunctional medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). Methylphenidate (MPH) remediates ADHD, in part, by inhibiting the norepinephrine transporter (NET). MPH also

Deficits in cholinergic neurotransmission and their clinical correlates in Parkinson’s disease

open access: yesnpj Parkinson's Disease, 2016
In view of its ability to explain the most frequent motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease (PD), degeneration of dopaminergic neurons has been considered one of the disease’s main pathophysiological features.

Nasal Mucosa‐Derived Extracellular Vesicles as a Systemic Antiaging Intervention

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study shows that nasal mucosa‐derived extracellular vesicles (nmEVs) exert systemic anti‐ageing effects in mice by restoring circadian rhythm, suppressing cellular senescence, and improving cognitive function. In aged human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, nmEVs reverse senescence‐associated phenotypes and reactivate core clock gene expression.

The Nucleus of the Solitary Tract and the coordination of respiratory and sympathetic activities

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2014
It is well known that breathing introduces rhythmical oscillations in the heart rate and arterial pressure levels. Sympathetic oscillations coupled to the respiratory activity have been suggested as an important homeostatic mechanism optimizing tissue ...

Homeostatic plasticity fails at the intersection of autism-gene mutations and a novel class of common genetic modifiers

open access: yeseLife, 2020
We identify a set of common phenotypic modifiers that interact with five independent autism gene orthologs (RIMS1, CHD8, CHD2, WDFY3, ASH1L) causing a common failure of presynaptic homeostatic plasticity (PHP) in Drosophila.
