Periodate Oxidation of Sugars in Neutral Phosphate Buffer
Nature, 1945WHEN yeast mannan was oxidized with sodium periodate in phosphate buffers of various pH values, it was discovered that the amount of oxygen consumed during the oxidation is enormously increased when the pH of the solution is raised above 4–5. At pH = 7, the consumption of oxygen is about ten times as large as at pH = 31. It was shown that two thirds of

Physiological Functions of Acid and Neutral Invertases in Growth and Sugar Storage in Sugar Cane
Physiologia Plantarum, 1972The roles of acid invertases, pH optima about 5, and neutral invenase, pH optimum 7, have been examined during growth and maturation of stalks of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) and hybrid cultivars. Bound acid invertases are found in the outer space which includes the cell wall.

A methods for the simultaneous separation and determination of amino acids, amino sugars and neutral carbohydrates is described. Stepwise elution systems with sodium citrate and borate buffers have developed for the ion-exchange liquid chromatographic separation of amino acids and sugars, using 8-micrometer particle size resins and the Stein and Moore ...

NEUTRAL SUGAR COMPOSITION OF POLLEN TUBE WALLS OF LILIUM LONGIFLORUM
Acta Botanica Neerlandica, 1983SUMMARY The tube walls of lily grown in vivo (in the stylar canal) contain more neutral sugars than the walls of pollen grains and the cell walls of roots. Pollen tubes grown in vitro are intermediate. Besides neutral sugars, β-1,3- and β-1,4-glucans, uronic acids and proteins are found.

Neutral and Amino sugars from the cell walls of Oomycetes
Biochemical Systematics and Ecology, 1980Abstract A survey of the wall sugars of 41 species of Oomycetes has been carried out to indicate whether they could provide information of taxonomic significance. These species contain one or more glucans with β 1→3, β 1→6 or β 1→4 linkages. No evidence for a β 1→2 linkages was obtained. Apart from the possible exceptions of mannose and galactose,

Neutral sugars in melanins synthesized by actinomycetes from Brazilian soils
Biology and Fertility of Soils, 1998Nine actinomycete melanins synthesized under various culture conditions, eight of them by actinomycete samples isolated from Brazilian topsoils under savanna (cerrado) vegetation and one from an ATCC sample, were subjected to a two-step hydrolysis procedure and the sugars released qualitatively and quantitatively determined by capillary gas-liquid ...

Changes in grapefruit flavedo cell wall noncellulosic neutral sugar composition
Phytochemistry, 1993Abstract Analysis of grapefruit flavedo cell walls detected seven neutral sugars. Arabinosyl and galactosyl residues were most abundant, followed by xylosyl, mannosyl, glucosyl and fucosyl residues. The percentage of the cell wall composed of neutral sugars (38%) decreased during development and ripening to 27%.

Simultaneous Determination of Neutral Sugars and Uronic Acids in Hydrocolloids
Journal of Food Science, 1988ABSTRACT An improved gas‐chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of neutral sugars and uronic acids in hydrocolloids or industrial gums was developed. The procedure involved methanolysis with 0.5M methanolic HCl followed by trimethylsilylation.
