Neutral Sugar Analysis of Tobacco Cell Wall Fractions [PDF]

open access: yesBeiträge zur Tabakforschung / Contributions to Tobacco Research, 1984
AbstractA method for the determination of the neutral sugar content of tobacco cell wall fractions has been developed. The seven neutral sugars - rhamnose, fucose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose and galactose - determined in the analysis represent the usual glycosyl residues found in plant cell wall polysaccharides.

Common Characteristics of HIV-Neutralizing Antibodies with a Fondness for Sugars [PDF]

open access: yesImmunity, 2015
Broadly neutralizing antibodies targeting quaternary epitopes on the apex of the HIV-1 envelope spike are an attractive vaccine target, yet engineering immunogens that recapitulate such epitopes has proven difficult. In this issue of Immunity, Andrabi and colleagues (2015) identify an exciting new candidate immunogen that could initiate the production ...

Does low-energy sweetener consumption affect energy intake and body weight? A systematic review, including meta-analyses, of the evidence from human and animal studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
By reducing energy density, low-energy sweeteners (LES) might be expected to reduce energy intake (EI) and body weight (BW). To assess the totality of the evidence testing the null hypothesis that LES exposure (versus sugars or unsweetened alternatives ...

Mucilage Polysaccharide Composition and Exudation in Maize From Contrasting Climatic Regions

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2020
Mucilage, a gelatinous substance comprising mostly polysaccharides, is exuded by maize nodal and underground root tips. Although mucilage provides several benefits for rhizosphere functions, studies on the variation in mucilage amounts and its ...

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Effects of Hydrolysis Condition and Detection Method on the Monosaccharide Composition Analysis of Polysaccharides from Natural Sources

open access: yesSeparations, 2023
Monosaccharide composition analysis is essential to the structural characterization and research into the biological activity of polysaccharides. In this study, a systematic comparison was performed among commonly used monosaccharide composition analysis

Hands‐on protocol for preparing water‐soluble fractions from agri‐food samples for NMR‐based metabolomics analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol outlines a workflow for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)‐based metabolomics in the agri‐food sector. Using two case studies—strawberry leaves (solid matrix) and wine (liquid matrix)—it details the procedures for sample preparation, data acquisition, and processing.

The Correlation Between the Chemical Composition and the Microstructure of the Polysaccharides of Two Varieties of Mexican Red Prickly Pear Fruits

open access: yesFoods
The red prickly pear fruit (Opuntia ficus-indica L. Mill), endemic from Mexico’s semi-desert regions and present in North Africa and Southern Europe, particularly Italy and Spain, is a valuable source of nutrients, bioactive compounds, and ...

The effect of neutral sugar distribution on the dilute solution conformation of sugar beet pectin [PDF]

open access: yesCarbohydrate Polymers, 2012
A partially degraded sugar beet pectin (C) was found to be heterogeneous in composition with neutral sugar-rich fractions of both high and low hydrodynamic radii. A neutral sugar-poor fraction was found at intermediate hydrodynamic radii. In this paper we demonstrate using both conformation zoning and the global analysis method that fractions of sugar ...
