Neutron powder diffraction is extensively used for the development and fundamental understanding of metal hydrides. In this chapter we will first present the basic principles of neutron diffraction. This will be followed by a discussion about the two main neutron sources used for diffraction experiments: reactors and spallation sources.

New single-toroidal sintered diamond anvil and assembly for high pressure neutron diffraction
In-situ high pressure neutron diffraction experiments, which require a large volume samples, remain challenging, particularly when generating simultaneous high pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions.

Engineering of Crystal and Domain Structures in Epitaxial Y:HfO2 Thin Films by YSZ Substrate Miscut
We investigate how YSZ substrate miscut influences crystal structure and domain formation in epitaxial Y‐doped HfO2 thin films. Using magnetron sputtering, high‐resolution X‐ray diffraction, atomic‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, and first‐principles calculations, we systematically examine the characteristics of thickness‐ and ...

A Compact Cryogenic Environment for In Situ Neutron Diffraction Under Mechanical Loading
Understanding the deformation mechanisms of materials at cryogenic temperatures is crucial for cryogenic engineering applications. In situ neutron diffraction is a powerful technique for probing such mechanisms under cryogenic conditions.

The crystalline structure, the atomic numbers of the constituent elementsand the size of MOF crystals each influence their photoluminescence and scintillation properties in distinct ways. Together, these factors provide valuable guidelines for designing systems with optimized performance and tunable timing characteristics, arising from the synergistic ...

Zero Thermal Expansion and Local Structure in KxMnxFe2‐xMo3O12‐Based Materials
Local structure engineering via ion insertion drives local structural transformation from low‐symmetry P21/a to high‐symmetry R‐3c, enhancing structural flexibility and realizing a transition from positive thermal expansion to wide‐temperature‐range zero thermal expansion in KxMnxFe2‐xMo3O12‐based materials.

Fabrication of Composite Cathode for All‐Solid‐State Sodium Batteries
The design of composite cathodes for all‐solid‐state sodium batteries must address three critical challenges—interfacial side reactions, interfacial delamination, and highly tortuous transport pathways. This work outlines structural and interfacial strategies to optimize ion transport and mechanical stability, enabling durable, and high‐performance ...

Neutron diffraction as an analytical tool in solid-state chemistry is briefly presented. We start by recalling a few characteristic properties of the neutron that make thermal neutrons a unique structural probe in solid-state science. The generation of neutrons, some fundamentals of neutron diffraction, concepts and components of instrumentation for ...
