Imaging with Neutrons

Elements, 2021
By exploiting the penetration, attenuation, and scattering properties of neutrons, images of matter in two or three dimensions reveal information unobtainable using other probes. Despite the limitation in brilliance of neutron sources, several neutron-based imaging techniques are essential to different aspects of modern geoscience.

Neutron radiography using neutron imaging plate

Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 2010
The aims of this research are to study properties of a neutron imaging plate (NIP) and to test it for use in nondestructive testing (NDT) of materials. The experiments were carried out by using a BAS-ND 2040 Fuji NIP and a neutron beam from the Thai Research Reactor TRR-1/M1.

Neutron Imaging Camera

2010 IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security (HST), 2010
We describe the Neutron Imaging Camera (NIC) being developed for the detection of special nuclear material by NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and NSWC/Carderock. The NIC is a self-contained, robust, omnidirectional, and 3He-independent neutron detector based on the Three-Dimensional Track Imager (3-DTI) technology developed at GSFC for gamma ...

Neutron Resonance Imaging

2016
Neutron Imaging using epithermal neutron beams is a technique that is not yet widely exploited. However, it offers an interesting potential allowing for joining the advantages of imaging (i.e. space-resolved information) along with element sensitivity (at least for most medium-weight elements).

Neutron imaging camera

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
The Neutron Imaging Camera (NIC) is based on the Three-dimensional Track Imager (3_DTI) technology developed at GSFC for gamma-ray astrophysics applications. The 3-DTI, a large volume time-projection chamber, provides accurate, ~0.4 mm resolution, 3-D tracking of charged particles.

Neutron Imaging Camera

2009 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security, 2009
We describe the Neutron Imaging Camera (NIC) being developed for DTRA applications by NASA/GSFC and NSWC/CD. The NIC is based on the Three-Dimensional Track Imager (3-DTI) technology developed at GSFC for gamma-ray astrophysics applications. The 3-DTI, a large volume time-projection chamber, provides accurate ∼0.4 mm resolution, 3-D tracking of charged

Neutron Phase Imaging and Tomography

Physical Review Letters, 2006
We report how a setup consisting of three gratings yields quantitative two- and three-dimensional images depicting the quantum-mechanical phase shifts of neutron de Broglie wave packets induced by the influence of macroscopic objects. Since our approach requires only a little spatial and chromatic coherence it provides a more than 2 orders of magnitude

Neutron Stress Measurement Using Neutron Image Plate

Materials Science Forum, 2005
A neutmn image plate (NIP) was developed recently as an area detector for the neutron experiment. It is possible to obtain strains along the line in the material where neutron beams penetrate as a Debye-Scherrer ring on the NIP. The diffraction ring contains continuous and different orientated strains, so that the depth profile can be determined ...

A polarizing neutron periscope for neutron imaging

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2009
Optical neutron polarizers like guides or benders destroy the collimation of a neutron beam due to multiple reflections or scattering. This makes them unsuitable for their use in polarized neutron radiography, because the beam collimation is essential to obtain high spatial resolution.
