Host‐mediated filtering and interspecific associations structure strongyle parasite communities in Sable Island horses

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Using individual‐level nemabiome metabarcoding of 3147 samples from 916 horses on Sable Island over 10 years, we generate the largest dataset of its kind to date. This unprecedented scale enables a rare test of the processes structuring parasite communities in a natural system, revealing dominant host‐mediated filtering and predominantly positive ...

FnR: R package for computing inbreeding and numerator relationship coefficients

open access: yesBMC Ecology and Evolution
Background Inbreeding and relationship coefficients are essential for conservation and breeding programs. Whether dealing with a small conserved population or a large commercial population, monitoring the inbreeding rate and designing mating plans that ...

Hominin dispersals: causes, conditions, and outcomes Dispersions des hominines : causes, conditions et issues

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
The ‘Out of Africa’ model that has dominated palaeoanthropology for nearly three decades was originally based on five elements: a recent ancestry to human populations; an African origin for the ancestral population; limited or no gene flow among archaic hominins and no admixture between modern humans and Neanderthals; a marked difference between the ...

Dispersal and new colony formation in wild naked mole-rats: evidence against inbreeding as the system of mating [PDF]

open access: yesBehavioral Ecology, 2000
Early field work on naked mole-rats, Heterocephalus glaber, suggested that small colonies are rare and that colonies can only form by fissioning of existing colonies. Many researchers expected that this would result in extreme inbreeding and high relatedness within colonies and would thus explain the evolution of eusociality in naked mole-rats.

Evolution of precopulatory and post-copulatory strategies of inbreeding avoidance and associated polyandry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Inbreeding depression is widely hypothesised to drive adaptive evolution of pre-copulatory and post-copulatory mechanisms of inbreeding avoidance, which in turn are hypothesised to affect evolution of polyandry (i.e., female multiple mating).

Brood parasitism reduces but does not prevent Bombus terrestris reproductive success

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Graphical depiction of the colony splitting process. Throughout figures in this paper, results pertaining to host success are represented in blue, and cuckoo success is represented in red. Abstract Cuckoo bumblebees are obligate brood parasites that must invade a colony of their host bumblebee species in order to reproduce.

IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM OF BIOLOGICAL FACTORS MANAGEMENT IN THE BREEDING OF FARM ANIMALS [PDF]

open access: yesRussian Journal of Agricultural and Socio-Economic Sciences, 2012
Due to economical transformations of 1990-s in the sphere of milking cows breeding its profitability has grown low on many Russian cow-breeding farms, which was accompanied by the deterioration of zootechnical registration, selection and analytical ...

Males are worse mothers: Comparing care patterns in a facultatively caring beetle

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Why should biparental care exist if offspring fare just as well when only one parent is present? In the facultatively dependent burying beetle, Nicrophorus vespilloides, manipulating environmental quality reveals that biparental care benefits offspring in form of lower personal immune requirement and parents in term of weight gain.

Museomics Deciphers the Phylogeographic Differentiation and Conservation Status of a Montane Pheasant

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Museum specimens provide a rich source of historical DNA, enabling insights into phylogenetic relationships and demographic history of the endangered Koklass Pheasant. Our findings uncovered a previously unrecognized population in Guizhou province and highlighted elevated extinction risk in populations from Anhui province and Southern China, informing ...

THE EFFECT OF IMPROVED REPRODUCTIVE-PERFORMANCE ON GENETIC GAIN AND INBREEDING IN MOET BREEDING SCHEMES FOR BEEF-CATTLE [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
The effect of improved reproductive techniques on genetic progress and inbreeding was investigated in MOET (multiple ovulation and embryo transfer) schemes for beef cattle.
