Interfacial Failure and Self‐Healing in Solid‐State Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Dynamic interfacial self‐healing offers an adaptive route to mitigate coupled mechanical, chemical, and electrochemical degradation in solid‐state batteries. This review connects evolving interfacial failure mechanisms with physical‐flow, chemical‐restoration, stimuli‐responsive, and electric‐field‐assisted repair strategies, highlighting targeted self‐

Unified structural and interfacial stabilization of Ni-rich NCM811 via surface-enriched fluorination

open access: yesCommunications Materials
Fluorine incorporation offers a powerful route to stabilize Ni-rich layered cathodes, yet its atomic-scale impact on structural evolution, interfacial chemistry, and electrode–electrode cross-talk has remained poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that

Ion Concentration and Voltage Imaging With Fluorescent Nanodiamonds

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We demonstrate reversible switching between the fluorescent NV0 and the dark NV+ state, in sub‐30 nm FNDs via surface oxidation and hydrogenation, respectively. In an electrochemical cell, we show that the fluorescence from hydrogenated particles enables all‐optical imaging of voltages and ion concentrations at the micrometer scale.

All‐Amyloid Functional Coacervates

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces an all‐amyloid interfacial complex coacervate technique that employs charge‐mediated or functionalization‐assisted complexation of oppositely charged food protein‐derived amyloid nanofibrils to engineer functional soft constructs across multiple length scales.

Electrolyte Engineering Challenges and Opportunities for Next‐Generation Aqueous Ammonium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Aqueous ammonium‐ion batteries (AAIBs) face a hydrogen‐bond paradox: the HB network enables fast NH4+ transport but triggers water decomposition. This review dissects this dilemma, evaluates multiple electrolyte engineering strategies, and outlines four future directions for next‐generation AAIB design ABSTRACT Aqueous ammonium‐ion batteries (AAIBs ...

Mitigating Electrochemical Isolation in Ni‐Rich Layered Cathodes for Durable Solid‐State Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Cathode–solid electrolyte (SE) interfacial instability poses a major challenge for achieving stable and high‐power operations in all‐solid‐state batteries, which promise superior energy density, thermal stability, and safety over the current Li‐ion ...

Lattice Strain and Built‐In Field Synergistically Boost Urea Oxidation via Dynamic NiOOH Mediation at Multiphase Heterointerfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A sulfur‐doped lignin‐derived carbon‐coated Ni‐NiO‐MoO2 nanorod array was synthesized, exhibiting enhanced UOR performance ‐ due to lattice‐strain and built‐in electric field effects by multiphase heterogeneous interface in Ni‐NiO‐MoO2@SC, excellent corrosion resistance, mass‐transport ability, and long‐term stability (500 mA cm−2 at 1.53 V for 500 h ...

Unraveling inhomogeneous rocksalt growth in Ni-rich cathode materials

open access: yes
Ni-rich cathode materials suffer from structural instability when cycled to high cutoff voltages. A transformation from the layered crystal structure to other phases, such as spinel and/or rocksalt, deteriorates the particle surface at low states of lithiation.

Dynamic Electrophoretic Assembly Coupled With Water‐Splitting‐Induced pH Control Enables Precision Ion Sieving Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A green, external‐catalyst‐free route grows defect‐free covalent organic framework membranes directly on ion‐exchange supports using an alternating electric field and in situ‐generated acid. Through a self‐regulating, self‐healing mechanism, the membranes achieve near‐complete, ultra‐fast separation of monovalent ions such as Li+, Na+, and K+, offering

How “Green” is Your Functional Material? Assessing Environmental Impacts of Multi‐Step Synthetic Protocols in Material Sciences at Various Technology Levels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Environmental Synthesis Radar (ESR) evaluates the environmental impact of (early‐stage) multi‐step chemical syntheses, providing a holistic view by using 18 midpoint impact categories. Unlike conventional life‐cycle assessment (LCA) approaches, ESR reveals three complementary metrics: overall impact Vtotal, environmental hotspots VEF, and critical ...
