Maternal Serum Cytokine Concentrations in Healthy Pregnancy and Preeclampsia

open access: yesJournal of Pregnancy, 2021
The maternal immune response is essential for successful pregnancy, promoting immune tolerance to the fetus while maintaining innate and adaptive immunity. Uncontrolled, increased proinflammatory responses are a contributing factor to the pathogenesis of

Niche for a technology or technology for a niche? [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 2013
There is little doubt that robotic surgery is here to stay. The real question is if the technologyhas transitioned fromnovelty and marketing tool to standard of care. The medical literature is rife with midterm results of robotic procedures as varied as mitral valve repair and thyroidectomy or prostatectomy and pancreatic resection.

The Niche Revealed [PDF]

open access: yesCell Stem Cell, 2008
SummaryA trio of studies in this issue of Cell Stem Cell from Mirzadeh et al., Shen et al., and Tavazoie et al. use three-dimensional imaging techniques to reveal microanatomical details of the adult neural stem cell niche. Combined, the results also provide a framework for future functional studies.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Brain development in adolescents at ultra-high risk for psychosis: Longitudinal changes related to resilience

open access: yesNeuroImage: Clinical, 2016
Background: The main focus of studies of individuals at ultra-high risk for psychosis (UHR) has been on identifying brain changes in those individuals who will develop psychosis. However, longitudinal studies have shown that up to half of UHR individuals
