Psychopharmacology, 1992
This issue has covered most of the important concerns of nicotine researchers. Inevitably, there are gaps, because the selection of papers could only cover those which had been submitted or were known to be in preparation and about to be submitted. Nevertheless, these articles should serve to stimulate further discussion of and investigation into all ...

Passive immunization against nicotine prevents nicotine alleviation of nicotine abstinence syndrome
Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 2001Passive immunization against nicotine interferes with its locomotor and pressor effects. The current study determined whether immunization could prevent another nicotine action: the reversal of nicotine abstinence syndrome. IgG containing 4.4-5.6% nicotine-specific antibody was isolated from rabbits immunized with 3'-amino-methyl-nicotine conjugated to

Nicotine regulates α7 nicotinic receptor subunit mRNA: implications for nicotine dependence
Neuroreport, 2001Recent evidence suggests that alpha7 subunit-containing nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) within the ventral tegmental area (VTA) are involved in the processes underlying nicotine tolerance and withdrawal. The current study used in situ hybridization histochemistry with multiple radiolabelled probes to amplify mRNA signal, to examine the distribution of ...

Nicotine, Brain Nicotinic Receptors, and Neuropsychiatric Disorders
Archives of Medical Research, 2000Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) represent a large family of ligand-gated cation channels with diverse structures and properties. In contrast to the muscular nAChRs, the physiological functions of neuronal nAChRs are not well defined to date.

Passive immunization against nicotine attenuates nicotine discrimination
Life Sciences, 2002Ten rats were trained in a two lever operant chamber to press different levers after a nicotine injection (0.14 mg/kg s.c.) or a saline injection on an FR10 schedule. The rats were then injected i.p. with either 150 mg nicotine-specific IgG or the same amount of control IgG from non-immunized rabbits.

Nicotine metabolism variability and nicotine addiction
Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 1999Individual variation in nicotine metabolism may play a role in a person's level of smoking, as well as in the transition from initiation to maintenance of a smoking behavior pattern. Since there is a paucity of research on nicotine metabolism in youth that smoke, a brief review of salient aspects of nicotine metabolism in adults provides a basis from ...

Nicotine and Non-nicotine Smoking Cessation Pharmacotherapies
Cardiology in Review, 2006Cigarette smoking remains an important risk factor for premature cardiovascular disease and its complications. There are clear benefits of cigarette smoking cessation on the rate of clinical outcomes, and in addition to behavioral therapies, various pharmacologic strategies have been developed to help achieve this goal.
