Inhibition of nicotine-induced Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation by salts solutions intended for mouthrinses [PDF]

open access: diamondRestorative Dentistry & Endodontics, 2019
ObjectivesBiofilm formation is critical to dental caries initiation and development. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of nicotine exposure on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) biofilm formation concomitantly with the inhibitory effects

Sensory appeal and puffing intensity of e-cigarette use: Influence of nicotine salts versus free-base nicotine in e-liquids

open access: hybridDrug and Alcohol Dependence, 2023
In the US, nicotine salts (with protonated nicotine instead of free-based nicotine) have been reported to lower the harshness and bitterness of e-cigarette aerosols, making it easier to inhale high levels of nicotine. This study aimed to determine whether nicotine salts also increase sensory appeal at lower concentrations (< 20mg/mL).

Structural Study of Nicotine Salts

open access: greenBeiträge zur Tabakforschung / Contributions to Tobacco Research, 1983
AbstractThe structures of three types of nicotine salts have been determined. These salts have acid to base ratios of either 1 : 1, 2 : 1, or 3 : 1. Salt formation between organic acids and nicotine is dependent upon the structure of the acids (aliphatic or aromatic) and their functionality.

Aporphine metho salts as neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor blockers

open access: greenBioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, 2007
(S)-Aporphine metho salts with the 1,2,9,10 oxygenation pattern displaced radioligands from recombinant human alpha7 and alpha4beta2 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) at low micromolar concentrations. The affinity of the nonphenolic glaucine methiodide (4) (vs [(3)H]cytisine) was the lowest at alpha4beta2 nAChR (K(i)=10 microM), and ...

tris-Azaaromatic quaternary ammonium salts: Novel templates as antagonists at nicotinic receptors mediating nicotine-evoked dopamine release [PDF]

open access: greenBioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2007
A series of tris-azaaromatic quaternary ammonium salts has been synthesized and evaluated for their ability to inhibit neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) mediating nicotine-evoked [(3)H]dopamine release from superfused rat striatal slices and for inhibition of [(3)H]nicotine and [(3)H]methyllycaconitine binding to whole rat brain ...

Molecular imaging of excitability difference between alkaloids/salts (nicotine, nicotinic benzoate, caffeine and arecoline hydrobromide)

open access: greenJournal of Pharmacological and Toxicological Methods
Comparison of the excitability of four different alkaloids/salts, including nicotine, nicotinic benzoate, caffeine and arecoline hydrobromide. Based on positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and 18F-Fallypride, a novel technique for measuring alkaloid/salt excitability in SD rats was developed.

Lactic Acid Salts of Nicotine Potentiate the Transfer of Toxic Metals into Electronic Cigarette Aerosols [PDF]

open access: goldToxics
The designs and liquid formulations of Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) devices continue to rapidly evolve. Thus, it is important to monitor and characterize ENDS aerosols for changes in toxic constituents.

Nicotine transport across calu-3 cell monolayer: effect of nicotine salts and flavored e-liquids

open access: closedDrug Development and Industrial Pharmacy, 2023
This study aimed to investigate the transport capability of nicotine across Calu-3 cell monolayer in various nicotine forms, including nicotine freebase, nicotine salts, and flavored e-liquids with nicotine benzoate. Nicotine is rapidly absorbed from the respiratory system into systemic circulation during e-cigarettes use.

Tetrakis-azaaromatic quaternary ammonium salts: Novel subtype-selective antagonists at neuronal nicotinic receptors that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release [PDF]

open access: greenBioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2008
A series of tetrakis-azaaromatic quaternary ammonium salts was synthesized to identify compounds with higher affinity and selectivity as antagonists at neuronal nicotinic receptor subtypes (nAChR) that mediate nicotine-evoked DA release. A high hit rate was achieved in identifying potent analogs that inhibit these nAChRs.
