Dysregulation of Oral Microbial Eicosapentaenoic Acid Induced by Chronic Restraint Stress Exacerbates Periodontitis via M1 Macrophage Polarization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The intricate interplay between chronic psychological stress and periodontitis, mediated by oral microbiota and macrophage polarization, remains largely enigmatic. Here, we demonstrate that chronic restraint stress (CRS) exacerbates periodontitis by inducing oral microbial dysbiosis and a consequential shift in host metabolism.

The plasma free fatty acid rebound induced by nicotinic acid

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1967
The time course of the nicotinic acid-induced changes in levels of plasma free fatty acids (FFA) was examined. The plasma FFA response of fasted dogs to graded doses of nicotinic acid was shown to be biphasic: an initial depression of the level of plasma

Repeated Disuse Atrophy Imprints a Molecular Memory in Skeletal Muscle: Transcriptional Resilience in Young Adults and Susceptibility in Aged Muscle

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Repeated disuse imprints a molecular memory in skeletal muscle, conferring transcriptional resilience in young adults but exaggerated susceptibility in aged muscle, driven by epigenetic regulation of aerobic metabolism, mitochondrial and NAD+ pathways.

Cholesterol modulates acetylcholine receptor diffusion by tuning confinement sojourns and nanocluster stability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Translational motion of neurotransmitter receptors is key for determining receptor number at the synapse and hence, synaptic efficacy. We combine live-cell STORM superresolution microscopy of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) with single-particle ...

A High‐Performance and Fully Recyclable Supramolecular Nanofibrous Membrane for Multifunctional Air Filtration

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A green, thermoreversible self‐assembly strategy yields a multifunctional and recyclable supramolecular nanofibrous membrane. Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet acts as a heterogeneous nucleation‐templating agent, simultaneously modulating the supramolecular crystal packing while tailoring the nanofibrous architecture for elite performance.

Acetylcholine release in mouse hippocampal CA1 preferentially activates inhibitory-selective interneurons via alpha4 beta2* nicotinic receptor activation

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2015
Acetylcholine (ACh) release onto nicotinic receptors directly activates subsets of inhibitory interneurons in hippocampal CA1. However, the specific interneurons activated and their effect on the hippocampal network is not completely understood ...

Peptide‐Incorporated Biomaterials Promote Regeneration of Peripheral Nerve Injuries

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Peptide‐incorporated biomaterials provide precise, tunable biological cues that mimic functional protein domains to regulate behaviors of neurons, Schwann cells, immune cells, and endothelial cells, thereby enhancing axon elongation, Schwann cell support, inflammatory microenvironment modulation, and vascularization, offering a promising alternative to

Nrt1 and Tna1-independent export of NAD+ precursor vitamins promotes NAD+ homeostasis and allows engineering of vitamin production. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
NAD(+) is both a co-enzyme for hydride transfer enzymes and a substrate of sirtuins and other NAD(+) consuming enzymes. NAD(+) biosynthesis is required for two different regimens that extend lifespan in yeast.

Endogenous cholinergic inputs and local circuit mechanisms govern the phasic mesolimbic dopamine response to nicotine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Nicotine exerts its reinforcing action by stimulating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) and boosting dopamine (DA) output from the ventral tegmental area (VTA).

Association of age at pancreatic cancer diagnosis with smoking and drinking: A hospital‐based and meta‐analysis study

open access: yesAdvances in Digestive Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Recent trends show an alarming rise in pancreatic cancer prevalence among young individuals. Previous studies have presented differences in age at diagnosis. The study aimed to examine the likelihood of a younger age at diagnosis in individuals exposed to known risk factors, compared with those without exposure.
