Functional Connectivity Disruptions in Grey Matter Volume‐Altered Brain Regions Among Male Smokers: A Neuroimaging Study

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 30, Issue 12, December 2025.
Based on a meta‐analysis of gray matter structural alterations in smokers and functional connectivity analysis, disrupted functional connectivity was observed in certain brain regions exhibiting structural changes, particularly within the visual attention, executive control, and sensorimotor networks.

Causal Associations Between Smoking, Brain Structural Alterations and Psychiatric Disorders: Evidence From a Mediation Analysis

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 30, Issue 12, December 2025.
This study establishes smoking as a causal risk factor for schizophrenia, major depression and bipolar disorder using genetic evidence. We identified microstructural disorganization in the left uncinate fasciculus, a key corticolimbic white matter tract, as a significant mediator of this risk, explaining 19.6% of the effect on depression.
