NiTi-Ta shape memory alloys

SPIE Proceedings, 1998
This paper studies the effect of Ta addition on the martensitic transformation characteristics and the X-ray visibility of NiTi shape memory alloys. It was found that: (1) The transformation temperatures of the Ti 49 Ni 51 binary alloy increase drastically by an addition of 0 -- 4at%Ta, but only slightly when the concentration exceeds 4at%.

Analysis of a NiTi Shape Memory Alloy

Materials Science Forum, 2015
This work demonstrates particularly the basic properties of shape memory alloys and gives a brief review about their basic crystallographic processes. The attributes of shape memory alloys will be presented through the NiTi alloys. The crystallographic principles of three unique properties were investigated and the functional mechanism described.

The triple-shape memory effect in NiTi shape memory alloys

Smart Materials and Structures, 2012
We report two approaches to realize the triple-shape memory effect (SME), i.e., returning to the original shape from the temporary shape through one intermediate shape in a gradual/step-by-step heating induced recovery, in NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs).

Thermomechanical Models for NiTi Shape Memory Alloys and Their Applications

ASME 2010 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems, Volume 1, 2010
Optimal design of SMA structures must be based on a deep knowledge of the material properties. As the SMA structures increase in complexity (stents, textiles, microdevices), modeling becomes increasingly involved. Macroscopic models of shape memory alloys are being developed with the ultimate aim to effectively simulate thermomechanical response of a ...

Thermal processing of polycrystalline NiTi shape memory alloys

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2004
ABSTRACTThe objective of this study is to examine the effect of heat treatment on polycrystalline Ti-50.9 at.%Ni subsequent to hot-rolling. In particular we examine microstructure, transformation temperatures and mechanical behavior of deformation processed NiTi.

Laser welding of NiTi shape memory alloy: A review

Journal of Manufacturing Processes, 2018
Abstract NiTi shape memory alloys (SMA) are broadly employed in multifunctional systems in several industrial domains, like aerospace, automotive, biomedical and power plants. Their functional properties, which include shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE), offer a particular flexibility to design many smart components.

Cyclic deformation of NiTi shape memory alloys

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1999
Abstract Recently, there is an increasing interest in applying the high damping capacity of shape memory alloys (SMAs). The purpose is to explore the feasibility of those materials for the protection of buildings and other civil constructions as a result of earthquake damages.

Plastic deformation of NiTi shape memory alloys

Acta Materialia, 2013
Abstract Dislocation slip in B2 NiTi is studied with atomistic simulations in conjunction with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The atomistic simulations examine the generalized stacking fault energy (GSFE) curves for the {0 1 1}, { 2 ¯ 1 1 } and {0 0 1} planes.

Nanofretting behaviors of NiTi shape memory alloy

Wear, 2007
Nanofretting refers to cyclic movements of contact interfaces with the relative displacement amplitude at the nanometer scale, where the contact area and normal load are usually much smaller than those in fretting. Nanofretting widely exists in microelctromechanical systems (MEMS) and may become a key tribological concern besides microwear and adhesion.

Thermopower behavior for the shape memory alloy NiTi

Journal of Applied Physics, 2001
We report thermopower measurements for the nickel titanium shape memory alloy Ni0.507Ti0.493. Our measurements reveal abrupt changes in the temperature dependence of thermopower, which correlate well with the structural phase transition between the austenitic and martensitic phases.
