Numerical Studies of Influencing Factors on the Homogeneity of the Powder Mixture during the Powder Spreading Process of Powder Bed Fusion–Laser Beam/Metal

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
AISI 304L stainless steel powder is mixed with silicon nitride (Si3N4) powder and processed by PBF‐LB/M, allowing partial retention of Si3N4. The numerical approach effectively predicts the Si3N4 powder homogeneity and N content distribution on the powder bed. Recent studies have focused on the alloying of nitrogen (N) in high‐alloy stainless steels by

Nucleation kinetics in drying sodium nitrate aerosols [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
A quantitative understanding of the evaporative drying kinetics and nucleation rates of aqueous based aerosol droplets is important for a wide range of applications, from atmospheric aerosols to industrial processes such as spray drying. Here, we introduce a numerical model for interpreting measurements of the evaporation rate and phase change of ...

Development of Ternary Magnesium Alloys for Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Optimizing Oxide Layer Thickness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing of magnesium alloys by laser is difficult because the melting point of the oxide layer is much higher than the evaporation temperature of the metal underneath. Making the oxide layer thinner can solve this problem. Alloying magnesium with strontium makes the oxide layer thinner, especially at 0.5 wt%.

Properties of Confined Ammonium Nitrate Ionic Liquids [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and propylammonium nitrate ionic liquids confined between polar glass plates and exposed to a strong magnetic field demonstrate gradually slowing diffusivity, a process that can be reversed by removing the sample from the magnetic field.

Manure Incorporation and Reduced Tillage Corn Trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Timely manure incorporation can reduce nutrient losses to the atmosphere and surface runoff. Keeping valuable nutrients, like nitrogen, in the soil can help reduce the purchase of expensive commercial fertilizers.

Icephobic Gradient Polymer Coatings Coupled with Electromechanical De‐icing Systems: A Promising Ice Repellent Hybrid System

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid system for de‐icing made of gradient polymer coatings, deposited on aluminum coupled with an electromechanical system, is demonstrated as an effective and durable strategy for reducing drastically ice adhesion. The system is capable of detaching ice blocks over the coating in less than 1 s, regardless of the ice type and covered area ...
