Comment on "Atmospheric ionization by high-fluence, hard spectrum solar proton events and their probable appearance in the ice core archive" by A.L. Melott et al [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Melott et al. [2016] suggest that individual solar proton events (SPEs) are detectable as nitrate ion spikes in ice cores. They use the high fluence, high energy (hard spectrum) SPE of 23 February 1956 to calculate an enhancement of HNO3 from the surface to 46 km that is equivalent to a ~120 ng cm-2 nitrate ion spike observed in the GISP2H ice core ...

Low time resolution analysis of polar ice cores cannot detect impulsive nitrate events [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics 119, 9430-9440 (2014), 2015
Ice cores are archives of climate change and possibly large solar proton events (SPEs). Wolff et al. (2012) used a single event, a nitrate peak in the GISP2-H core, which McCracken et al. (2001a) time associated with the poorly quantified 1859 Carrington event, to discredit SPE-produced, impulsive nitrate deposition in polar ice.

Understanding links between water-quality variables and nitrate concentration in freshwater streams using high-frequency sensor data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Real time monitoring using in situ sensors is becoming a common approach for measuring water quality within watersheds. High frequency measurements produce big data sets that present opportunities to conduct new analyses for improved understanding of water quality dynamics and more effective management of rivers and streams.

Does thiosemicarbazide lead nitrate (TSLN) crystal exist? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The authors of a recent paper (Optik 125 (2014) 2022-2025) claim to have grown a so called thiosemicarbazide lead nitrate (TSLN) crystal by the slow evaporation method. In this comment we prove that TSLN is actually thiosemicarbazide.

Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria for Aquaponics as a New Strategy That Grants Quality and Nutrient Efficiency in Kohlrabi Cultivation

open access: yesHorticulturae, 2023
Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about eating healthy, and the products they consume are produced in an environmentally friendly way. Therefore, in this work, production techniques such as aquaculture and the use of plant growth-promoting ...

Vasodilator Therapy: Nitrates and Nicorandil

open access: yesCardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, 2016
Nitrates have been used to treat symptoms of chronic stable angina for over 135 years. These drugs are known to activate nitric oxide (NO)-cyclic guanosine-3′,-5′-monophasphate (cGMP) signaling pathways underlying vascular smooth muscle cell relaxation ...

The glycogen accumulation in cells of Chlorobium limicola under the conditions of the disruption of some steps of the Arnon’ cycle

open access: yesБіологічні студії, 2010
Nitrates are not utilized by photosynthetic green sulfur bacteria Chlorobium limicola as the nitrogen source. Addition of these compounds into the medium inhibits the growth of bacteria but stimulates the glycogen accumulation.
