Melott et al. [2016] suggest that individual solar proton events (SPEs) are detectable as nitrate ion spikes in ice cores. Low time resolution analysis of polar ice cores cannot detect impulsive nitrate events [PDF]
Ice cores are archives of climate change and possibly large solar proton events (SPEs). Wolff et al. (2012) used a single event, a nitrate peak in the GISP2-H core, which McCracken et al. (2001a) time associated with the poorly quantified 1859 Carrington event, to discredit SPE-produced, impulsive nitrate deposition in polar ice.

The authors of a recent paper (Optik 125 (2014) 2022-2025) claim to have grown a so called thiosemicarbazide lead nitrate (TSLN) crystal by the slow evaporation method. In this comment we prove that TSLN is actually thiosemicarbazide.

The thermophilic acetogenic model organism Moorella thermoacetica can utilize lactate as substrate. The formation of lactate by reduction of pyruvate is energetically favorable, but the reverse reaction, the oxidation of lactate to pyruvate with NAD+ as electron acceptor is challenging.
