Recent advance in high-pressure solid-state metathesis reactions

open access: yesMatter and Radiation at Extremes, 2018
High-pressure solid-state metathesis (HPSSM) reaction is an effective route to novel metal nitrides. A recent advance in HPSSM reactions is presented for a number of examples, including 3d transition metal nitrides (ε-Fe3N, ε-Fe3−xCoxN, CrN, and Co4Nx ...

Investigation of work function and chemical composition of thin films of borides and nitrides [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Thin films of various borides, nitrides, and barium fluorides were tentatively deposited by pulsed laser deposition and by magnetron sputtering in order to develop the components of thermionic-photovoltaic devices for the high-temperature thermal to ...

Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

Effects of macroscopic polarization in III-V nitride multi-quantum-wells

open access: yes, 1999
Huge built-in electric fields have been predicted to exist in wurtzite III-V nitrides thin films and multilayers. Such fields originate from heterointerface discontinuities of the macroscopic bulk polarization of the nitrides.

Hard superconducting nitrides [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2005
Detailed study of the equation of state, elasticity, and hardness of selected superconducting transition-metal nitrides reveals interesting correlations among their physical properties. Both the bulk modulus and Vickers hardness are found to decrease with increasing zero-pressure volume in NbN, HfN, and ZrN.

Reduction of Oxide Inclusions During the High‐Frequency Welding of Steel via a Nonthermal Ar/H2 Plasma Jet

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐frequency (HF) welding of steel is limited by oxide inclusions that degrade weld quality. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the integration of a nonthermal Ar/H2 dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma jet into HF welding. Local plasma treatment provides effective shielding and in‐situ oxide reduction, resulting in markedly fewer and ...
