Impact of nitrapyrin on urea‐based fertilizers in a Mediterranean calcareous soil: Nitrogen and microbial dynamics

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Soil Science, Volume 75, Issue 4, July–August 2024.
Abstract Nitrification inhibitors, such as nitrapyrin (NI), are increasingly co‐applied with nitrogen (N) fertilizers as part of sustainable agricultural practice. Several studies in temperate regions have documented the effectiveness of NI in retaining soil ammonium (NH4+), minimizing N loss and increasing crop yields. However, less is known about the

A relation between the temperature of atmosphere and the sludge in the wastewater treatment aeration tank [PDF]

open access: yesActa Montanistica Slovaca, 2006
Processes in the aeration tank remove nitrogen from organic substances from wastewater by using bacteria. Nitrification utilizes the metabolism of aerobic bacteria Nitrosomonas, Nitrococus, Nitrospira, Nitrobacter Nitrocystis and Nitrosobolus and the ...

A split herbicide application strategy reduces surface runoff

open access: yesSoil Use and Management, Volume 40, Issue 3, July 2024.
Abstract Herbicides, such as MCPA and clopyralid, may be transported to surface waters via runoff, which can have unintended environmental consequences. A split herbicide application strategy, wherein applications are spread across a season, may improve herbicide effectiveness, although impacts of this strategy on runoff mitigation have not been ...

Nitrification-denitrification in WSP: a mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in maturation ponds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A pilot-scale primary maturation pond was spiked with 15N-labelled ammonia (15NH4Cl) and 15N labelled nitrite (Na15NO2), in order to improve current understanding of the dynamics of inorganic nitrogen transformations and removal in WSP systems.

Transforming waste to wealth: Impact of food waste‐derived soil amendments and synthetic nitrogen fertilizer on soil dynamics

open access: yesSoil Use and Management, Volume 40, Issue 3, July 2024.
Abstract Approximately one‐third of all food produced globally goes to waste, highlighting the need for sustainable waste management technologies like composting and anaerobic digestion. These technologies convert food waste into soil amendment products such as compost, liquid digestate (LD) and solid digestate (SD).

Experimental and theoretical study on reactive oxygen and nitrogen species generation in plasma bubbles with ammonia solution

open access: yesPlasma Processes and Polymers, Volume 21, Issue 6, June 2024.
Our study introduces plasma bubbles‐assisted ammonia treatment, a promising method enhancing N‐fertilizer performance while curbing ammonia emissions. By exploring specific reaction pathways and the role of OH radicals, we unveil the secrets behind this innovative approach.

Operation of a sequencing batch reactor for cultivating autotrophic nitrifying granules [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The granulation of nitrifying sludge in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with NH4 +-N-laden inorganic wastewater was investigated. After 120-day operation spherical and elliptical granules with an average diameter of 0.32 mm were observed.

Mycorrhizal type and tree diversity affect foliar elemental pools and stoichiometry

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 242, Issue 4, Page 1614-1629, May 2024.
Summary Species‐specific differences in nutrient acquisition strategies allow for complementary use of resources among plants in mixtures, which may be further shaped by mycorrhizal associations. However, empirical evidence of this potential role of mycorrhizae is scarce, particularly for tree communities.
