An Introduction to Wear Degradation Mechanisms of Surface-Protected Metallic Components
Despite the fact that ceramics and polymers have found numerous applications in several mechanical systems, metals and metallic alloys still remain the main materials family for manufacturing the bulk of parts and components of engineering assemblies ...

Compound Layer Design for Deep Nitrided Gearings
Deep nitriding is used to obtain a nitriding hardness depth beyond 0.6 mm. The long nitriding processes, which are necessary to reach the high nitriding hardness depths, mostly have a negative influence on the hardness and strength of the nitrided layer ...

Effects of surface roughness and alloying element on surface morphology and tribology of low-alloy steel after gas-nitrocarburizing [PDF]
This paper aimed to study the effects of initial surface preparation and Chromium (Cr) content on morphology and tribological properties of gas nitrocarburized AISI 1015 steel and AISI 4115 steel.

Herein, a solution for locally increasing the wear resistance of austenitic stainless steel by electron beam cladding of a Co‐based alloy and subsequent gas nitrocarburizing is elaborated. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance can be improved as a result of the combined treatment process.

The Contact Mechanics of Novikov’s Surface‐Hardened Gearing during Running‐in Process
The article is devoted to the analysis of the state of the contact surfaces of the higher kinematic pair in the general case of relative motion, that is, in the presence of rolling, sliding, and twisting, which is characteristic of Novikov’s circular‐screw gears.

Friction Characteristics of Machined Metal with Different Surface Morphologies
This study examined the friction characteristics of SAE1045 medium carbon steel processed by milling machining (MM) and abrasive jet machining (AJM). Friction experiments were conducted with variations in load and friction distance. Experimental results show that micro craters produced by AJM help retain lubricant on workpiece surface and thus decrease
