Nature, 1957ANTIBACTERIAL, nitrofurans are reduced to the corresponding amino-compounds by Aerobacter aerogenes 1. The site of the reaction (in a different organism) is now shown to be the cytoplasmic membrane rather than the cell wall or cytoplasm. Lack of an enzyme system capable of effecting this reaction in the bacterial cell walls was not unexpected2.

Nitrofurazone: Vas Irrigation as an Adjunct in Vasectomy
Fertility and Sterility, 1978Intraoperative vas irrigation with nitrofurazone utilized in a 1-mg/ml concentration can cause immediate sterility postoperatively. This irrigation procedure adds little time to the standard vasectomy and can easily be performed as an outpatient office procedure, minimizing time-consuming postoperative semen analyses.

The effect of nitrofurazone on the thiamin status of chickens
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Comparative Pharmacology, 1983Nitrofurazone, given orally at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg for seven days, decreased the activity of erythrocyte transketolase (TK) and increased the activation of TK by thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP effect %). Nitrofurazone also decreased the feed intake and growth of the chickens, and increased the concentrations of lactate and pyruvate of their blood.
