Nitrogen balance as an indicator of nitrogen leaching in Finland

Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment, 2006
Abstract When measured data of nitrogen (N) losses to the environment are not available, calculated N balances are often used to indicate losses. The aim of this study was to describe the relations between N surface balances and N leaching losses in two agricultural runoff fields.

Influence of growth rate on nitrogen balance in adolescent sprint athletes.

International Journal of Sport Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism, 2013
This study aimed to estimate nitrogen balance and protein requirements in adolescent sprint athletes as a function of growth rate and physical development. Sixty adolescent sprint athletes were followed up biannually over a 2-yr period. Individual growth

Nitrogen Balance Studies in Human Pregnancy

Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 1981
Sixty-eight primigravidae successfully complete a 12-day nitrogen balance study when they were between 30 and 34 weeks pregnant. Particular attention was paid to ensure that each patient ate a hospital diet quantitatively equal to the home diet; each patient ate the same every day and all food was eaten.

Nitrogen Fixation and the Nitrogen Balance in Peatland Ecosystems

Ecology, 1980
A survey of heterotrophic nitrogen fixation was carried out using the acetylene reduction assay on peat from mires in Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Germany, Italy, and Malaysia. A detailed study of the relationship between nitrogen fixation and peatland ecology was carried out on the German sites.

Nitrogen Balance in Parenteral Nutrition

Archives of Surgery, 1975
To the Editor.—We were interested to read "Nitrogen Balance in Postoperative Patients Receiving Parenteral Nutrition" by Van Way et al (Arch Surg110:272, 1975). We have had considerable experience in the assessment of intravenous nutritional regimens in patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery, and we agree that increasing calorie and nitrogen ...

The Negative Nitrogen Balance

1987
A shift towards a negative nitrogen balance implies impairment of essential life processes. Among the substances adversely affected are: Enzymes in the Krebs cycle, resulting in impaired carbohydrate metabolism and anaerobic metabolism, with a consequent deterioration of the circulation Transport proteins in blood plasma, such as hemoglobin ...

Nitrogen Balance in a Citrus Orchard

Journal of Environmental Quality, 1984
AbstractDifferential fertilizer and irrigation applications were utilized to assess the N balance over a period of 4 yr in a typical mature ‘Shamouti’ orange (Citrus sinensis L.) grove located in the coastal plain of Israel. Nitrogen inputs in fertilizer and irrigation water were 100, 180, and 310 kg ha−1 annually for the three main treatments.

Positive Nitrogen Balance in Burn Patients

Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1984
Two case-histories of patients with full thickness burns covering 60 and 70% of their bodies are presented. In spite of the obligatory increase in the metabolic rate, both patients had a positive nitrogen balance from the very beginning, maintained exclusively by peroral nutrition.

Nitrogen balance of crop production in Ukraine

Journal of Environmental Management, 2019
Lands of Ukraine are intensively used. Usage of insufficient amounts of fertilizers leads to destruction of soil organic matter, causing complete loss of soil fertility. In 2015, the total nitrogen balance in Ukraine was negative. It is -152.3 Gg or -5.8 kg N/ha/yr. In different regions, these indicators varied from -34.6-24.7 kg N/ha/yr.
