A two-lane mechanism for selective biological ammonium transport

open access: yeseLife, 2020
The transport of charged molecules across biological membranes faces the dual problem of accommodating charges in a highly hydrophobic environment while maintaining selective substrate translocation.

Comparative Proteomics of Three Species of Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are important members of terrestrial, marine, and industrial microbial communities and play a fundamental role in the Nitrogen cycle within these systems.

Characterization of the ferrioxamine uptake system of Nitrosomonas europaea [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology, 2007
The chemolithoautotroph Nitrosomonas europaea has two genes predicted to encode outer-membrane (OM) ferrioxamine transporters. Expression of the ferrioxamine uptake system required induction, as shown by the shorter lag phase in ferrioxamine-containing cultures when ferrioxamine-exposed cells were used as an inoculum.

Ecophysiology and Comparative Genomics of Nitrosomonas mobilis Ms1 Isolated from Autotrophic Nitrifying Granules of Wastewater Treatment Bioreactor

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), which oxidize ammonia to nitrite in the first step of nitrification, play an important role in biological wastewater treatment systems.

Biological nitrification inhibition by rice root exudates in two different soils of Uruguay

open access: yesActa Agriculturae Scandinavica. Section B, Soil and Plant Science, 2021
Rice root exudates can control nitrification by releasing biological nitrification inhibitors (BNIs), reducing nitrogen losses in agricultural soils. However, the inhibitory effect on nitrification and the abundance of ammonia oxidisers in different soil

Efficient Unnatural Protein Production by Pyrrolysyl-tRNA Synthetase With Genetically Fused Solubility Tags

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2021
Introducing non-canonical amino acids (ncAAs) by engineered orthogonal pairs of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases and tRNAs has proven to be a highly useful tool for the expansion of the genetic code.

A molecular dual carriageway

open access: yeseLife, 2020
In order to enter a cell, an ammonium ion must first dissociate to form an ammonia molecule and a hydrogen ion (a proton), which then pass through the cell membrane separately and recombine inside.

Biomass production from electricity using ammonia as an electron carrier in a reverse microbial fuel cell. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The storage of renewable electrical energy within chemical bonds of biofuels and other chemicals is a route to decreasing petroleum usage. A critical challenge is the efficient transfer of electrons into a biological host that can covert this energy into

Root exudate fingerprint of Brachiaria humidicola reveals vanillin as a novel and effective nitrification inhibitor

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences, 2023
Introduction: Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI) is defined as the plant-mediated control of soil nitrification via the release of nitrification inhibitors. BNI of Brachiaria humidicola (syn. Urochloa humidicola) has been mainly attributed to root-

A Potentiometric Flow Biosensor Based on Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria for the Detection of Toxicity in Water

open access: yesSensors, 2013
A flow biosensor for the detection of toxicity in water using the ammonia-oxidizing bacterium (AOB) Nitrosomonas europaea as a bioreceptor and a polymeric membrane ammonium-selective electrode as a transducer is described.
