Immunological Detection of Nitrospira-like Bacteria in Various Soils

Microbial Ecology, 2002
Chemolithotrophic nitrite oxidizers were enriched from five different soils including freshwater marsh, permafrost, garden, agricultural, and desert soils and monitored during the cultivation procedure. Immunoblot analysis was used to identify the nitrite oxidizing organisms with monoclonal antibodies, which recognize the key enzyme of nitrite ...

Niche specialization of comammox Nitrospira clade A in terrestrial ecosystems

Soil Biology and Biochemistry, 2021
Comammox Nitrospira are a newly discovered group of nitrifying prokaryotes and might be key contributors to nitrogen cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Their large-scale distribution patterns and the dominant environmental factors shaping their ecological niches are not yet well documented.

Competitive enrichment of comammox Nitrospira in floccular sludge

Water Research
The discovery of complete ammonium oxidation (comammox) has subverted the traditional perception of two-step nitrification, which plays a key role in achieving biological nitrogen removal from wastewater. Floccular sludge-based treatment technologies are being applied at the majority of wastewater treatment plants in service where detection of various ...

Relevance of Nitrospira for nitrite oxidation in a marine recirculation aquaculture system and physiological features of a Nitrospira marina ‐like isolate

Environmental Microbiology, 2011
Summary In biofilters of recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS), nitrification by lithoautotrophic microorganisms is essential to prevent the cultivated organisms from intoxication with ammonium and nitrite. In moving‐bed biofilters nitrifying microorganisms are immobilized together with heterotrophic bacteria in

Phylum BVIII. Nitrospirae phy. nov.

2001
The phylum Nitrospirae is based mainly on phylogenetic grounds. At present, it consists of a single class, order, and family of Bacteria and environtaxa that branch deeply in the major reference trees; member taxa consistently group together. Gram-negative, curved, vibrioid or spiral-shaped cells.

Specific Micropollutant Biotransformation Pattern by the Comammox Bacterium Nitrospira inopinata

Environmental Science & Technology, 2019
The recently discovered complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria occur in various environments, including wastewater treatment plants. To better understand their role in micropollutant biotransformation in comparison with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), we investigated the biotransformation capability of ...

Isolation and immunocytochemical location of the nitrite-oxidizing system in Nitrospira moscoviensis

Archives of Microbiology, 1998
A membrane-associated nitrite-oxidizing system of Nitrospira moscoviensis was isolated from heat-treated membranes. The four major proteins of the enzyme fraction had apparent molecular masses of 130, 62, 46, and 29 kDa, respectively. The nitrite-oxidizing activity was dependent on the presence of molybdenum.

The environmental detection of comammox Nitrospira

2017

Nitrite concentration influences the population structure of Nitrospira ‐like bacteria

Environmental Microbiology, 2006
Summary Chemolithoautotrophic nitrite oxidizers of the genus Nitrospira are a monophyletic but diverse group of organisms, are widely distributed in many natural habitats, and play a key role in nitrogen elimination during biological wastewater treatment.

Comammox Nitrospira clade B contributes to nitrification in soil

Soil Biology and Biochemistry, 2019
Abstract Comammox, one nitrifying microorganism carries out the complete oxidation of ammonia to nitrate, have been recently discovered, and are found in a wide range of environments, including soil. However, conditions under which they actually contribute to nitrification in soil have not yet been demonstrated.
